This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

ismael opened his eyes and found himself in all-too familiar territory. the skies were tainted red by some unknown power, and darkened pokémon lurked at every corner, but he was always safe from them. they stayed far away from him, and ismael was grateful for it. if this was a dream, it was slightly better because they didn't attack.
but whenever some approached too close, he found himself scared of them -- he told himself that it was a normal reaction to these things, but his brain reacted differently. it said that he was wrong to fear them; he should be accepting these ... these strange pokémon.
a hadean ninetales approached ismael, and he took a step back.

the book alex flipped through was monotonous. there was only so much you could learn about dissection before it became a droll subject. he dumped it on the floor, walking away without another thought. from the corner of his eye, he spotted a familiar figure. was it...? why on earth would he be here? unless the scourge thought he was worthy.
"hey." alex called, adjusting his headphones to hang from his neck. he shooed the ninetails with a flick of his wrist, approaching ismael. "ismael. strange to see you."
he felt it. alex's body hummed in acceptance, sensing the comraderie. a vicious grin spread across his face. "welcome to our home."
a familiar voice rang through the area. ismael held his breath, more focused on the ninetales than he was on the speaker. after the fox ran away upon command, he finally looked up. he found himself staring into a familiar face -- it explained why the voice sounded like someone he knew.
"brother," he whispered, and his eyes widenened. ismael took a step back -- he didn't know why he was walking away from kin instead of towards him, but he couldn't resist the urge. the grin on alexander's face was familiar as well; still, it unnerved ismael. "i didn't -- expect you, either."
this was his dream. this was not his home.
"you left me behind," ismael said. a certain viciousness snapped behind his uttered syllables, and he wasn't sure why. "this is not my home."

a dream? foolish boy. in a dream, nothing is real. you wake up in a shock after a nightmare.
but here, everything is real. the pain, the blood, your death.
alex took a step forward, reaching out with one hand. "ismael... you don't seem very happy to see me. i'm your older brother." a slight twitch of confusion passed through alex's mind. this was not his home? it was the land of nightmares, home to the scourge. it welcomed alex with open arms, it would do the same for--
ah.
"i see... you don't feel it." alex moved forward, would keep moving forward until he had ismael trapped. "you don't feel the power that slices through your heart, the same power that flows through kohaku... you haven't felt your body's bond to it. the power that people can't handle." alex's eyes were wide, smile spread into one of insanity. this was not the same brother who helped ismael up after he skinned his knee as a child.
"you're chosen. she chose you. that's why you're here. with me. in our home."
the brother who helped him up after he skinned his knee? bullshit. ismael picked himself up time after time, and alexander was the one who told mother that ismael had scraped himself while playing. mother had said her youngest son was a clumsy and silly child. had he not known that other children had the same happen to them, he would have thought himself foolish beyond redemption.
ismael heard words fall from alexander's lips but he did not listen to them. his brother was a liar and that was the truth. he prayed that fear would seize his heart.
he knew he could not leave until he woke up, shaking from the horrors of the land. the hadean pokémon hastened the process, but today, his brother was here in place of them. ismael did not welcome such a change; he would rather suffer death at the hands of a taunting scyther than suffer through a conversation with brother dearest.
"i don't live here. i'm going to wake up. you can kill me, and i won't die, because i'll wake."

alex loved ismael. ismael was the sweetest baby there ever was. but then they grew up and reality landed. the faysals would never be the same.
alex laughed. "kill you?" it was amusing. he couldn't kill ismael. ismael was family. he couldn't kill his baby brother. "you're the one living a dream." he took a piece of paper from his pocket. "call me when you wake up. let me be the one to console you from the nightmare you had, brother."
