All they need is each other. The scourge originates at lake pax, but decima is close, falls fast. They leave him - them - in a locked house with the scourge pawing at the windows, doors, struggling to find cracks in the walls to enter because they smell blood. Somehow, they escape - holding hands, for that matter -, and despite the promise that he makes to his brother that they'll stick through this together, by the time the scourge surround him, hollow-eyed and hungry, he's very much alone. So he gives up, he offers himself to them, because a world without his brother is a world filled with enemies like them, a world he doesn't have an interest living in. In the end, he still lives, but half of him dies with decima, buried within its ruins. There's little hope that his brother made it - he's only alive because they allow him, though he doesn't know why - and he almost goes mad the first few days, but not quite. What stops him is a lake, the reflection of his brother, not him in its surface, and with time, he fills his empty shell with his brother's soul, takes on his brother's name, becomes his brother, always was the stronger of the two of them. And though the facade will sometimes break, it never crumbles, and that's all he needs to keep going until the ugly world is born anew. They reject him, call him weird when he speaks to himself in whispers, but he doesn't care. Because he's disgusting, surviving, feeding on memories of the past.
