This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

sophia steps over the roots and overgrowth, while her mamoswine unintentionally crushes everything in his path. phillip had wanted to pay some respects to their mutual friend. sophia couldn't do much but oblige. they travel to the amber glade, but not far enough to run afoul of the amberwell. sophia has learned her lesson the hard way.
harder than she imagined. phillip would remember, how much she cherished the snorunt so. he would also know better than to question her affections for her partner. which is the reason that she agreed to return to ceres at all.
sophia's eyes wander to one particular part of the amberglade, the waters that flowed freely next to a mossy rock.
<is that where she died?>
the mamoswine cannot see her face underneath her new helmet, but she nods stiffly.
The Amberwell was pretty. It was a bit too marshy, and yet the simplistic, muddy scene charmed Kaz. It was a comfort in the midst of panic, and Kaz appreciated that. For him, it would be a sanctuary. The Amberwell had a something in it that the Scourge just could not handle -- he wasn't a science guy. Hydrogen, Helium, they were all the same to him. All he needed to know was that he was safe in and around its waters. Kaz hoped he wasn't wrong as he circumnavigated the clearing.
God knows how he missed the Mamoswine. "Shit," his whisper was more audible than he would have liked, and yet he somehow he couldn't find the sense to run. He knew what a normal Mamoswine looked like. That wasn't one. And that lady was no Eos trainer. It felt as though his head was swelling up, like it would swell until it burst, and he would wake up soon enough. Why wasn't he running? And why were they so close to the water? toska
the mamoswine notices the trainer's presence before his partner does. protecting her is his first priority. he raises a wall of stones in a stealth rock circle, ready to block off any threat to the two.
sophia cannot help but worry about the proximity of the amberwell, but the mamoswine is a quadrupedal and several hundred kilograms heavier than her first scourge partner. nevertheless, she attempts to move them a little further away from the water. some of phillip's attacks can be rather ... disruptive.
He hadn't even thought of the element of surprise, which was probably saying more about his character than it was about his tactics. Running didn't seem to be an option anymore, not when he was confronted with a likely veteran, as well as the crushing guilt of allowing them to just take the Amberwell. He silently wondered why more people weren't around if the damn Amberwell was like a gold mine. The blind were leading the blind.
Beside him, the Vullaby cawed pathetically, a bite still instilled in the screech. It would have embarrassed him in any other situation, but this shit was real. He could only think of running. It was his only instinct, yet despite all odds, Kaz remained. He would pat himself on the back later. If he still had one. "Something tells me you and the beast aren't wanted here." it sounded more curious than hostile. Sucking in air, he puffed up his chest to look more intimidating. As if that would help in a Pokemon battle. "Or at all." there, that was meaner. toska
the vullaby is vaccinated. all vestiges of mercy melt away from her bones. this is the woman who has the most number of eos battles in the entire region - she has picked and cleaned the bones of trainers who are far more experienced than he.
she is not satisfied by platitudes. she is satisfied by results. physis switches her styler on and draws signs with practiced speed.
nevertheless, there is a part of her that fears for phillip's safety still. slowly but surely, the two shift gradually away from the edge of the amberwell.
mamoswine used scary face on vullaby mamoswine used icy wind on vullaby (-spd) mamoswine used ancientpower on vullaby QXLXQcDH <10 all stats +1 mamoswine used ice fang on vullaby <10 flinch <10 freeze
physis draws fire sign - will-o-wisp <85 burn physis draws regice sign - ice beam <10 freeze
She wasn't in the mood for small talk from his smart ass, no she wasn't. He obliged as she proceeded to open fire on him. Grimacing, the Vullaby shared her pain with her rookie trainer. Kaz was irritated. Digging in his pocket, he found Lake's pokeball. Thanks went out to Karimi for the vaccination.
Vullaby dodges Ice Fang. Vullaby is hit by everything else.
Vullaby uses Leer.
Kaz sends out Wooper. Wooper hit by Stealth Rock?
Wooper uses Tail Whip. Wooper uses Double Kick.
toska [is using tail whip and leer in the same turn useful? do they stack?]
physis does not like hesitation. she does not like it when the world is anything less than the uncompromisingly brutal lion pit that she has always known. if she is to brandish a sword at a child (she's twenty-six okay), then she would much rather meet steel upon steel.
that's not what she tells anyone else.
mamoswine is hit by tail whip mamoswine dodges double kick
mamoswine uses ice fang on vullaby EfJp7TKD <10 flinch <10 freeze mamoswine uses ancientpower at the vullaby <10 all stats +1
mamoswine uses freeze-dry on wooper
physis draws mew sign - psychic at wooper physis draws regirock - stone edge at vullaby
[icy wind carries an automatic speed debuff, so vullaby only had one move - which was used by the dodge. stacking isn't something that i'm always sure of, but i personally assume they do]
Every part of the battle was confusing. Things happened too quickly -- even for a massive Mamoswine, that thing could move -- and he was having trouble strategizing. Kaz could feel the synchronicity between himself and his Pokemon to be off. It was just hard. He needed a breath, and he wasn't going to get it. This lady meant business.
Vullaby is hit by Ice Fang. Vullaby is hit by AncientPower. Vullaby is hit by Stone Edge.
Vullaby uses Leer. Vullaby uses Steel Wing.
Wooper dodges Freeze-Dry. Wooper is hit by Psychic.
physis feels little satisfaction in the battle - she never does. unlike some combatants, she never did relish in the damage dealt or the aliments inflicted. if she can bring forth a conclusion, then that is enough.
by now, the mamoswine is far enough from the riverbank for physis to feel fairly comfortable about fighting in this place. it is about time to finish.
mamoswine is hit by leer mamowsine is hit by tail whip mamowswine dodges mud shot mamoswine dodges steel wing

physis draws keldeo - secret sword against wooper physis draws palkia - spacial rend against wooper
[ i just realized that i scaled the pkmn's lvl to 10 and not its original 38, so exp gain would actually be 2 each #oops ]
Ah shit. Vera was down. Kaz knew from the start that she stood little-to-no chance against the mammoth. Still, she fought with aplomb, and when it was said and done, Kaz quickly returned her to her Pokeball before she was devoured by the zombie. It was just Lake, and things weren't looking hot. Kaz's head swiveled as he panicked, realizing that he was about to lose. It didn't feel like an option, but if things kept going the way they were, it would be inevitable. Weren't there rangers posted in this fucking jungle? Where were they? He clenched his fists in frustration.
Bye Vullaby.
Wooper is hit by Freeze Dry. Wooper is hit by Spacial Rend. Wooper dodges Secret Sword.
Wooper uses Double Kick.
toska [Eh w/e...someone could hop in if they wanted to, right?]
by now, physis realizes that this isn't like decima town, where she would be surrounded by four vaccinated pokemon at once. this isn't decima town, where death stalked her at every step.
this is ceres, where agent partners came to die.
she looks at her mamoswine. today is not phillip's day.
mamoswine dodges double kick mamoswine uses freeze-dry on wooper mamoswine uses scary face on wooper mamoswine uses icy wind on wooper mamoswine uses ice fang
physis draws latias sign - mist ball physis draws meleotta sign - relic song
[dodges are allowed every other turn for non-scourge, unless there is an eva buff. also, i'd throw in my own ranger except i don't think i'm allowed to battle myself - find a friend? or hook might find someone since amberwell is a Plot Concern ]
They fell like dominoes, his small team of two. Kaz looked on with a controlled face that could only stand for horror. He knew that they were weak, but he didn't expect them to go down so quickly, and he didn't expect such a challenge so soon. None of that mattered to him at the moment, of course, as he returned his fallen Wooper to his Pokeball with the flashing of bright light. He needed a way out of there before he followed his team's suit -- no one would be able to revive him later.
physis does not allow him to leave so easily. she draws the psychic sign - teleport to the trainer's side. the mamoswine stays where he is. she grabs him roughly by the shirt front.
is this an eos trainer or a man with vaccinated pokemon, she wonders. physis takes a good long look at him, watching for his reaction.
Ceres is her home - the place she grew up in, the place she left to join EOS. It's still her home, as wandering as she is now, and Arceus damn her if she can't protect it. So understandably she's enraged when she sees a scourge and its human - thanks, Thalia - near the Amberwell. Especially because it's near the Amberwell.
The fact that she's right in Kaz's face doesn't help matters, either.
Without prompting, Madonna takes on a mamoswine from hell as Lyre follows suit.
"Kaz? What the hell are you doing here?"

Kaz's reluctance bit him in the ass once again as the figure apparated to his side, gripping his body as it leaned, ready to go anywhere other than there. It may have been the Amberwell, but he was no martyr. He wasn't going to die for it.
"Let go you coward." he said futilely. He knew she wouldn't. She seemed as cold as the armor that protected her. It was her second line of defense after the Mamoswine. Kaz couldn't decide whether it was smart or faint-hearted as he locked onto the helmet. Aside from the moving around, Kaz couldn't see the smallest indication of a facial feature. His scrutiny was shortly interrupted by a call behind him.
"Ahuda!" he blurted, half-relieved to see a friendly face and half-worried for his new acquaintance as he craned his neck away from the agent. When they'd met, Kaz could tell that they were at similar points in their progression as handlers. Whatever brought her there was an act of god, but he didn't want to see her get hurt.
