This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Thalia had dreamed of Weatherfield a few times since she'd been here last. True dreams, not the shadows of the Dream World. The crunch of grit and stone under her feet had been alarmingly real, the roof of the cave seeming to press down upon her in a slow advancement of inches, and she'd woken covered in sweat, staring into the blackness like it could tell her anything at all.
And eventually, she had returned. The ruins were not like her dreams, unforgiving and claustrophobic, but they were labyrinthine. She wandered through them without any real aim, wondering if her tyranitar could punch a way out.
looking for a mega stone for charizard, tyranitar or venusaur.
when thalia steps into the correct room, steam starts to rise from the ground in characteristic spirals. within minutes, the open labyrinths begin to feel like a closed sauna. if thalia didn't think that the room was claustrophobic now, then the tellumo ruins wasn't trying hard enough.
a charmander stands in front of a stone tablet, swishing his tail back and forth, back and forth. he yawns a little as he hears footsteps approaching, but he turns around quickly to greet his guest.
<hiya!> he gives a cheery little wave. <are you new here, chaaaaar?>
<talia?> the charmander looks at her inquisitively. <taliaaaaaaa>
hey, it was a charmander okay. don't expect too much out of its phonetic competence. the charmander wanders behind the stone tablet and pulls out a mystery egg. he carries it over to thalia and lays it gently in front of her. <take this egg with you for a little bit, taaaalia. protect it well.>
<you should follow me, chaaaar> without another word, the charmander scurries along to the left. if thalia followed, then she would realize that they were headed towards a rather spacious spiraling staircase, worn away by age. many stones were loose, and debris littered the steps. not the best place to be walking around with an egg.
<c'mon taaaalia. gotta hurry before they realize that we're here>

He was just a charmander, Thalia supposed, but she still winced every time he mangled her name.
She accepted the egg without complaint--at least the egg wasn't talking to her (yet)--and set off after the charmander, breaking into a light jog as she cradled her entrusted gift against her chest. The staircase wasn't that stable, but she had a new sense of trust in her muscles, these days. Her grip on the egg was gentle but unwavering.
"Who or what is this delightfully cryptic they?" she called out.
the charmander silently climbs the stairs ahead of thalia. it's a lot of climbing.
<chaaar? the parents, of course!> he chimes a little too cheerfully. <your need is greater than theirs, isn't it? see you at the top, taaaaalia>
as if to answer her question, the tower begins to rumble. the sound of snarling beasts can be heard from the bottom of the stairs. if thalia cared to check, then she would have seen the heads of a charizard x and a charizard y emerge, followed by their full bodies. they seem furious enough to roast thalia alive, and that probably wasn't too far from the truth. the charmander egg would be fireproof enough.
<good luck!> and with those parting words, the charmander scurries upwards and out of sight, the fast little fucker. he would already be at the top before thalia reached halfway.

Haha word. The charmander's final explanation rang in her ears, but Thalia didn't look down. She knew that was a price she wasn't interested in paying.
Was her need greater? The egg wasn't heavy in her arms.
There was a lot more she'd sacrifice for what she knew had to be done than one egg. She'd offered far more than that to the fire already. Thalia kept running forward, no hesitation in her mind.
the mega evolutions continue to scamper up the stairs (it would have been awkward to fly) and breathing searing flames in thalia's direction. charizard x breathed flamethrowers while the charizard y sent a heat wave sweeping up the stairs.
if the other room felt like a sauna, then this tower probably felt like an oven in comparison.

She wondered if her hair was getting burnt at the edges. Her once advantage was that a) she'd gotten a head start and b) charizard weren't really designed for running. Still, she hoped she got the end sooner rather than later.

Thalia might not have been a divinely blessed favorite of the dice gods like her evil male counterpart, but they smiled upon her with a fickle grace from time to time. She maintained a comfortable distance between herself and the chariards.

Rock shattered and fell from the walls, but it seemed to hinder the charizards just as much as it did Thalia; she felt them falling behind her, roaring their impotent rage. The egg pulsed warmly in her hands, and she tucked it closer against herself as shale and dust showered down. A chunk hit her shoulder and spun off, but she kept climbing.
the charmander is waiting for her at the top. the desert wind is probably a welcome reprieve from the boiling hot staircase.
<quick, taaalia! you gotta put the egg in the stone cube!>
he points in the direction of a charizard statue that sits in the back of the chamber, eyes wide open and mouth agape. it's easily several stories tall.
what's probably more important is the small black cube that sits in front of the statue. there is a spherical indent in the stone, just big enough to set a pokemon egg.

She staggered into the open. The wind scoured. The staircase boiled. Thalia ignored the former as she had the latter, though her skin probably wouldn't thank her the next day.
She didn't stop to crane her head back at the statue, or bother looking at anything except the cube. She made herself cross the chamber. She knelt beside the box.
Thalia held out the egg over the box. She paused.
She decided it didn't matter. Thalia put the egg in the cube.
