This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

He'd spent far too much time in Proserpina. His Pokemon had gotten stronger and he'd seen enough of the big city, ready to make his way forward. Forward onto Bacchus where he would hopefully get some kind of answers. For now, though, Kaz felt it necessary to get the gym badge -- it was a way of validating all that wasted time. He needed to get a move on, he needed to catch up to Ahuda.
His appearance in the gym seemed to go unnoticed. The library was full of people and even fuller of books. While they were reading, Kaz couldn't help but wonder if they were all there waiting for a challenge. He contemplated picking up a book if it came to waiting. Kaz was no reader. He hoped it wouldn't come to that. @mod
jasper spent more of his time in the proserpina gym now that most of his planned excavations have been slowed to a rude halt. he's been gathering investments and grants for years for some of them, but nobody could predict that the region would go to hell after the scourge hit.
he's not complaining too much, however. pokemon battles were another joy in his life, and the man enjoyed seeing the growth of all the trainers who stopped by his gym, eager to attain greater strength.
although the gym was a library open to all, the majority of them were archeologists who were under jasper's employ. they should probably have been challenging trainers on a good day, but this was not a good day for them. not since the formal cancellation of their trip had been announced.
nevertheless, challenges had to go on. jasper walks amongst them until he comes across a new face. "hello! are you a challenger to this gym?"
(heads up, his pokemon scale up if you're using higher leveled pokemon, but the movesets remain the same. 2v2 single battle) cass
The sound of a voice ringing out caught Kaz's attention. The words that seemed to be directed toward him were spoken more loudly than the trainer would have expected in a library. Abraham then realized that it didn't really matter -- nobody was going to be yelling at the gym leader for talking in his own gym. Kaz subtly looked the man up and down, nodding his head. "Yeah. Nice to meet you." toska
the gym trainers are more or less used to jasper's open demeanor. most of them don't even so much look up from their books.
"my name is jasper, and i'm the gym leader at this gym. what is your name?" he smiles amiciably at kaz before pointing in the direction of a set of double doors. "let's not waste any time, then! i am sure that you are eager to test yourself for the fossil badge"
and with that, he walks them to the battle stadium. he unclips a single pokemon from his belt and sends out a shieldon.
Kaz could have figured that Jasper was the gym leader, just by his disposition. He still smiled and gave that fake "oh, really!" look. "Again, nice to meet you, Jasper. I'm Kaz." They went into another room together.
It opened up, more so than he'd expected. It was a perfect room for battling, not that he'd expected much else. Kaz found that there were less books in this room. Less books to ruin with misfired Embers and Water Guns. Not that any trainer in their right mind would use a fire-type attack against this guy.
The gym leader released a Shieldon. Kaz responded by sending out Lake, his Quagsire. It was a good matchup. He felt confident. Having the first move as well was just another advantage. "Thank you, Jasper. Good luck."

lake used tail whip lake used mud shot (-spd) toska btw i'll probably screw up so just let me know
hey you never know - c'mon there are people who pick the fire starter.
"i see that you have done your homework!" jasper seemed rather pleased in spite of - or maybe because of kaz's type advantage. "very good - a ground and water type pokemon would be the perfect choice!"
shieldon dodged mud shot shieldon is hit by tail whip shieldon used tackle :shieldon: lvl 30 cass
That's what I used to do with Brock, except I'd get a Nidoran and train it until it learned Double Kick. Perhaps these other people bring in Nidoran that know Double Kick?
Kaz took the gym leader's compliment with a grain of salt. Being the first gym leader, he probably got a lot of challengers, unlike the eighth where the weaklings were weeded out already. Jasper probably had his own personal soundboard with like 20 different things he says to his challengers. "Thank you. I did, in fact, do my studying."

metal claw charmander >>>>>> except on the gameboy colors i guess. that's where you just overlevel it and spam ember to get past the high def stat.
why yes, jasper did indeed get flooded with challengers. that's because he's not in decima town where everyone is literally dying of poison. or in any of the scourge territories really, where some new trainers tended to get discouraged and quit. also, he happened to be considerably more pleasant than atalanta, who tended to trash talk the entire way through and throw challengers overboard the ship.
"good to hear!"
shieldon is hit by mud shot shieldon is hit by tail whip it's a 1-hit ko according to my damage calculator lmao
jasper only seems to get a little more excited.
"you're up, jade!"
lileep is sent out. lileep used mega drain lileep used ingrain
That was easier than expected. Kaz shrugged as the Shieldon went down, surprised at the lack of difficulty. "Beginner's luck." he explained, somewhat smug.
lvl 30
quagsire hit by mega drain quagsire used tail whip quagsire used double kick toska
the smugness isn't something unfamilliar to jasper. after all, he's probably the gym leader who takes on the most challenges in the region. better to be smug than beaten down and disillusioned, though. "you should give yourself more credit!"
lileep dodges double kick lileep is hit by tail whip lileep uses mega drain
The Quagsire had taken all that it could at such a disadvantage. Kaz watched the Pokemon fall, seemingly exhausted of all energy as it laid there, unconscious. He felt himself grimace, sharing in the Pokemon pain as he searched his pocket for another Pokemon. Vera was the only one who was ready. She would have to do.
