This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

They said the warehouse was supposed to be positively crawling with wild Pokemon. Sammy figured it was just another day in her streak of bad luck when none of them showed up.
Not for a lack of trying, of course. She tried EVERYTHING to make some appear. She left behind food to try and attract the hungry ones. She let out her Feebas and Swinub to try and lure some in for a closer look. She even sat in the middle of a freezing warehouse, hiding inside of a cardboard box to try and hide the fact that a human was present. And yet for all of her effort, all Sammy had to her name was a flopping fish and some nasty wind chills.
Anyone with lesser willpower would have long turned away by now, but Sammy refused to. Not when she finally had a chance to explore the world away from Bacchus. This was going to be the start of her research career, and it was going to be big. She just needed a few Pokemon to fill out the Pokedex with: a Feebas, a Swinub, and a picture of a Gothitelle just wasn't enough. Maybe if she waited a little longer, something would finally take the bait.
And so she waited, Pokedex in one hand, pen in the other, and sketchbook resting on her knees. For the most part it was dead silent in the warehouse, other than the occasional scuttling of a wild Pokemon followed by a near-inaudible hiss of "Yes, yes, just eat the freaking food already." It was cold, it was dark, but not even the end of the world could deter Sammy from pursuing her art!
Maybe somebody bumping into her hiding spot would, though. That'd just redefine embarrassing for the poor artist.
Josh had heard rumors of wild pokemon being here. With a want for training, he decided to check it out.
His Pokemon wouldn't survive the scourge if they weren't trained up. It was a necessary thing. But yet, as he walked in... Where were the Pokemon?
He took a short breath as his eyes gazed around the empty warehouse... There was nothing in here... Not a heartbeat, not a pitter patter, not a trace of life....
Until something crossed the corner of his eye. Someone hiding. What in the name of....
"You lost?" he asked, a slight smirk crossing his face. His expression showed that of amusement.
Oh crap somebody had saw her. Sammy quickly looked around, trying to identify the source of the voice. Not that it was easy to in this darkness . . . maybe she should just respond.
She stood up, shedding the cardboard box and turning to the new arrival. "Hello!" she exclaimed, as if hiding in cardboard boxes was the most normal thing in the world. "This is just some great weather, isn't it?"
Sammy was not exactly the most gifted when it came to social graces.
How in the blue hell was he supposed to react. He had to think on that one for a moment.
"Well, hello there Solid Snake" he remarked with a chuckle as he shook his head at this odd woman. "The weather is.... Well, I don't think it matters in here, he said, shaking his head amusedly.
"And what, may I ask, were you doing in that box?"
"Well, I would be sketching some Pokemon if there were any," she remarked, deathglaring the darkness as if hoping some Rattata would come scuttling out for her to start drawing.
"How about you?" Not that he was in a box, of course. Well, unless this warehouse counted as a big metal box. No, no, he obviously knew she meant how his day was going, right?
He gave a shrug. "Well, I have a few Pokemon you could sketch if you like" he offered. "Honestly, I came here to train. I don't trust myself to go out into the scourge with a weaker team, so the best I can train them as possible, the better. I'd like to finish the gym here too before I go anywhere" he said.
Why was she in a box? Was she trying to stealth sketch? Was she a snake? Arceus alive, these people were strange in this town.
"R-really? That'd be great! Thank you so much!" She perked up a little at the possibility, only to jump a little at the sound of a Pokeball opening.
When she turned around, a Pokeball rolled out of her pocket and a Feenbas was flopping on the ground. She let out a bit of a nervous giggle. "I don't think Borealis would mind meeting some new friends either."
Oh god, it was just one embarrassment after another today, wasn't it?
He laughed a bit. "Well, here's an idea. Why don't we try a battle?" he asked. "That'd be good for some sketch inspiration" he offered. "Maybe your fish will move a little better in a battling environment too" he suggested.
With that, he took out a Pokeball. Which one should he use here....
