This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

A breath of air escaped the lips of Josh Dragomir as he stared out at the sunset. His training was ongoing, he promised himself he would not leave this city until he had defeated the gym.
Why? Because the scourge was merciful to nobody. He learned this the hard way. His entire family did. And for that, he would ensure that he didn't go after them until he was ready.
Sure, was he impatient to go right at getting revenge for his families fallen, and protecting others from suffering loss? Of course he was. But tact had to reign over desire, or he would suffer loss just as they did.
For now, he walked along the docks, taking a break from the rigorous training. He breathed again, looking out at the water. It was a beautiful sight indeed, one that Dragomir appreciated because he may never see it again. That, he knew. In a life in a land such as this, you could never be sure.
the sun is setting on yet another day, and ahuda finds herself at the docks. it's nearly the same place where she and tiffany had fallen in, and that incident seem so far away now, even though it couldn't have possibly been more than a month or two ago.
she sighs, and stares at the sunset. she's not the only one on the docks - the spring weather had brought with it nicer temperatures and a few people were out and about right now - but she appreciates the silence.
He noticed a woman along staring out at the sunset. Curious, he walked over. As he stood beside her, he watched the sunset.
"Quite a beautiful thing, huh?" he asked quietly. "Yet, at the same time it's more beautiful when you think of the fact it could be the last you see, with how dangerous the world is here. It's a shame, really, that something, particularly the scourge, might ensure they never see these sunsets again...
"Just makes you appreciate it that much more though" he said with a slight smile.
"you could say that." the sun is still setting, and slowly; spring had brought with it longer hours of daytime, after all. "but you could also say that all sunsets are the same."
He chuckled a bit as he looked up. "I suppose" he responded. "And that's the thing, people take that kind of thing for granted after they've seen it a couple of times. Then suddenly... No more. Snap. Just like that. And then you say you miss it, and realize how something so simple can be so beautiful"
He looked over at her. "You one of the people fighting the scourge then?"
"perhaps," ahuda repeats. she's not a philosopher. she leaves that to the people who have the time (right) to dream.
"yeah." this is when she'd release a pokemon, had she been a trainer or breeder or any other profession - anything but a ranger. but as her pokemon are partners, she merely nods toward the mienshao lingering at the very edge of the dock. "that's my partner. you?"
He smiled faintly, before releasing a Torchic from it's Pokeball.
"Torchic, Tor!" it let out as Josh allowed it to stand on his shoulder.
"This is my partner" he said, chuckling as he patted the bird... Er, red chicken, er, fire fowl, er... You get the point.... 's.... Head.
"Haven't really gotten ourselves into battles yet. Just been training our butts off to prepare for it" he said with a slight smile. "When the time comes, I don't want to lose another pokemon"
the torchic gets an amused glance and smile from ahuda. "that's a good idea. although if it's with trainer battles, you don't have anything to worry about - it's the scourge you want to watch out for."
the mention of 'another pokemon,' she doesn't pry into - plenty of people had lost pokemon in the course of this war.
"Aye" he said, looking out at the sunset with a smile. "I never did get your name, did I?" he asked, before looking over at Ahuda. It hadn't occurred to him to ask the young woman's name as of yet. Was probably something he should have bloody looked into already. Why hadn't he bothered? Like he knew. Maybe he was just enjoying himself too bloody much.
"Josh" he responded. She seemed quite... Off. As if she cared little for politeness or formalities. He didn't bother extending a hand, as she didn't seem interested.
"EOS Trainer" he responded, patting the Torchic on the head. "Just starting out, really, but the little guy's doing well" he said, motioning toward the Torchic. "Probably going to give him a bit more training solo and then put some focus on the other two Pokemon I have. See if I can't round out my team" he said.
she'd start with the formalities again when the newbies stop dying. it's easier that way. it makes the deaths less personal
(although they should be)
"that's a good strategy," she says instead of moping, and gives a little wave to the torchic. pokemon are different; they, at least, warrant some greeting because they, too, have opinions, hopes, dreams. it's easier for ahuda to cope with a death if all she has to remember them by is the pokemon. "what sort of team do you have? are you specializing?"
"No specialization" he said, shaking his head. "I'll go with what team works best, while trying to keep as well rounded as I can be. Better not to get caught in a corner and trapped, yknow?" he said, giving a shrug as the Torchic let out a "Tor!" toward the new girl.
"What about you?" he asked. "Do you keep a type speciality, well rounded, or do you have any other sort of strategy?" he asked, leaning against the post nearby as he spoke with a slight smile.
"ah, no. but my pokemon tend to be battle-orientated; heavy hitters, all of them." and unsubtle, but she won't say that. she's doesn't really have any room to talk.
"having outs is a smart thing, yeah. although specialization sometimes makes it easier when you really need that one type you don't have."
He nods a bit. "Mine are all bred for battle, basically. Been trying to train them all to be suited for scourge battling" he said. "Do need to vaccinate two of them though. I don't trust myself to take them out to battle it while there's a risk of infection"
He couldn't bear to lose them. He couldn't bear to lose another one.
"I prefer the fire type, which might make Torchic here my main Poke" he said. "But I try to keep as well rounded as I can be"
