The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

It was finally time. After training and working their tails off, it was finally time to challenge the gym leader! Blaze was at her side, flames blazing because he was ready to battle. But...where did she go to do that?
Emily walked around the building, but she couldn't find a soul. "Hello? I'm here for a gym battle?"
The gym was empty today, except for Jasper and a few archivists doing their good work. He'd received a call from Lady Mercedes to lend a hand in Juno City, and he had the itching suspicion that she meant he go himself, but Jasper couldn't just abandon his gym! He'd sent all of his trainers instead.
His ears strained and he swore he heard something.
Yeah, he definitely heard somebody.
"A gym battle, you said? I can do that for you!" he called out. Getting up from his work table (just a normal table in the corner of the arena, covered with papers and a few fossils), he flicked on the bright, overhead spotlights to the battlefield. "Come on over here. Was just doing some filing work, sorry there's no one around!"
He flipped a pokeball into his hand, releasing an omanyte onto the field.
"I'm Jasper, gym leader of Proserpina City! Ready whenever you are!"
Emily had to adjust her eyes as lights were flipped on suddenly. Looking over, she saw the gym leader, Jasper, smiling toward her. He seemed young for a leader but hey, she wasn't there to judge.
When he released a pokemon onto the field, Emily smiled and waved back to the male. "Thank you! I'm Emily, and I'm ready to win your gym badge!" Then she released Bulb onto the field. "Let's go!"
"Hey, good luck then! Kohaku's always happy to have more trainers."
He rubbed his nose and the bulbasaur appeared, thinking. Lapis had just the thing for grass types, but... it was a little harsh to start a gym battle with that sort of move, wasn't it? Especially when a trainer had thought ahead and brought a pokemon that was strong against rock types...
Nah. These were tough times for the region, gotta make trainers tough too.
Aurora Beam? So early on? Emily should have seen that coming. "Dang. Bulb, dodge and use Sleep Powder!" The Ivysaur nodded and barely managed to move out of the way of the beam, only to then shake a powder over the arena.

The bite attack landed on Bulb and he cried out in pain. But he shook the opponent off, only to growl out in defiance. He wasn't about to go down that easily! Emily smiled and called out again.
"Great job! Use Poison Powder and Vine Whip!"

The poisonpowder settled onto the omanyte, but Lapis shrugged it off after a particularly violent shudder. It sneezed, a bit too cutely for an ambiguously shaped prehistoric mini-cthulu, and took a vine whip to the face. Ouch!
Lapis tumbled over backwards, her shell clunking against the arena ground.
Trembling slightly, she used her suction tentacles to pull herself back up. Then she lunged for the bulbasaur with a tentacular constrict.
Alright, not bad. The constrict move was more annoying than it was effective, and Blub shook the pokemon off with ease. "Alright! You're getting the hang of it! Let's use another Sleep Powder and Vine Whip!"

Damn, another vine whip. Not good, not good! "Watch out, Lapis!" Jasper warned.
Lapis was in fact watching out. No one wants to be hit by a vine whip like that again, after all. She trundled off the side, neatly avoiding the whips. In response, she ducked in for another bite.
So the vine whip was effective, eh? By the way Jasper looked, it had to be! Emily smiled, but clicked her tongue at the bite. Bulb took another bite to the leg, and he was getting tired fast.
"Alright, one more time! This time we'll use a Poison Powder and Vine Whip combo!"

The omanyte croaked and fell over onto her side. Her little tentacles squirmed trying to get back up, but after a few seconds, she gave up, just lying still and closing her eyes.
"Good try, Lapis! I'm proud of you, girl." Jasper recalled the omanyte, and in her place, he sent out an archen. "Agate, lets start this with a pluck and double team."
"Nice! You were great Lapis! And you too Bulb!" Emily called, smiling at both pokemon. But when Jasper released an Archen, Emily frowned. Hmm, how would this pan out?
"Dodge Pluck and use Sleep Powder!"

It only took that one pluck move to knock Bulb over and out. He seemed to be in a peaceful sleep however, so Emily wasn't too worried about him. "You did well dear. You deserve a rest!" Emily nodded, recalling Bulb before releasing another pokemon into the fray.
"Mirage! Use Dark Pulse!"
