This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

after jasper, it was time to fight esme. dust had evolved into a lairon, and it tagged along happily as they moved through the darkness of the caverns. it was getting darker, steadily, and J couldn't see in the dark. his beldum could, though. the creature saw in the dark as easily as anyone could with night vision goggles.
what was a step above that? J had no idea. neo might know, though; but he didn't ask. he walked in silence, and entered the gym.
"challenge," he announced, to the darkness and god knows who else was there.
Neo couldn't see shit. She'd considered bringing out her charmander for the sake of light, but with the unending crypts surrounding her, she somehow felt that'd be a little rude.
It's not like the path wasn't nicely paved and clean of debris. If she tripped in the darkness, she'd have tripped on her own feet.
When J entered the gym, Neo loitered off to the side, sticking close to the doors rather than venturing out any deeper into the darkness.
"Oh, believe me, I heard you from all the way downstairs."
A ghostly, purple flame floated in the center of the gym's second floor. The faint fire giggled, floated to and fro, before flitting towards the back of the room. It illuminated a blue-green-haired woman's face, pale, lacking any telltale signs of how she was feeling. Her scarlet eyes stared both J and Neo down, unwavering. Unlike Neo and J, she was not phased whatsoever by the shadows of the gym in the heart of Di Manes (though she suspected that the darkness didn't bother the pair as much as it had for other trainers she had faced in the past.
A slender hand was placed upon her hip, where three Pokéballs were attached to a black belt, and upon closer examination, it became clear that the purple flame that hovered by the woman's face belonged to a single Litwik. "Single battle, three Pokémon each. Let's cut to the chase, so don't waste my time," Esme stated flatly, not waiting around for anyone. "If you can't get past me, you're best left to the Scourge outdoors."
She took a single Pokéball and released the Pokémon within the capsule. Out from a red light came a single Yamask.
even though dust was by his side, it was not J's pokémon of choice for the battle. he launched his pupitar's pokéball towards the ground, and caught the sphere as it sprung back into his hand. by now, apex was raring to go. its eyes leered about in the darkness, but there wasn't much it could do.
"understood," J said, as the pupitar lumbered forth. "apex, scary face then dark pulse."
And cut to the chase J did. Excellent. That was just what Esme liked, though not even the slightest hint of white from between her lips showed the woman's approval. Instead, she watched the Pupitar slowly move forward with an unimpressed expression. "Andromeda," she said to the Yamask. "Take the Dark Pulse." So the ghost Pokémon closed her eyes to avoid seeing the gruesome face that the Pupitar would put on. As a result, the rock Pokémon's burst of darkness sent her reeling back a bit.
The Pokémon's eyes began to glow red as a faint, purple aura encompassed both her own body and the Pupitar's. She began to command a Disable, in hopes of cutting off one of the Pokémon's super-effective dark moves.
the disable surrounded apex, trapping it in a circle before disappearing entirely. the pupa pokémon blinked, its fierce expression relaxing briefly in its confusion. it whirled around in the darkness to face J, and the trainer's voice rang in the darkness. "sandstorm," said J, and apex obeyed.
the narrow cavern corridors started to gust with a bout of sandy wind. a sandstorm had started in the cave; the pupitar remained unmoving despite the weather advantage it held. deciding to make use of the cave's structure, it unleashed a rock slide on andromeda.
Andromeda was swept backwards by the powerful gust of dusty wind in her direction. The Yamask blinked as the entire area was shrouded in sand. Of course, she wasn't too concerned about visibility. After all, this was a Pokémon who had grown used to battling in the shadows. The winds were going to be the greatest problem for her. They tossed her about and slammed her into the rocky sides of the cavernous gym.
"Andromeda, stay focused," the gym leader commanded decisively. "Go in with a Will-O-Wisp and Shadow Ball."
The ghost Pokémon shook itself free of dust, then surged forward through the winds, unleashing, first, an eerie blue flame, then a ball of hazy darkness to back it.
the shadow ball struck apex squarely on the head, and the creature roared indignantly. it scrunched its face up in a scary manner, attempting to intimidate the yamask into not attacking it any more. while it used its scary face, the will-o-wisp disappeared as the strength of the sandstorm increased.
Andromeda was a sneaky one. As the Pupitar put on a grisly facial expression, the Yamask quickly threw up a glassy forcefield of Protect. It glazed over the Pokémon's field of view in time to obscure the Pupitar's Scary Face. Then Andromeda quickly sneaked around to behind the Pupitar, lunging forward, screeching at the top of her lungs as she popped out from the darkness. Such was the nature of an Astonish attack. Of course, this was not without the ghost Pokémon having to fight tooth and nail to push through the sandstorm. Each time she moved forward, the Yamask was blown back by a face full of sand.
apex blinked as the astonish struck it. it skidded backwards, growling at the opponent. as the sandstorm raged on, it lashed out with a rock slide and screech.
More rocks began to pile up on top of Andromeda, and the Pupitar's screeching was absolutely deafening. Still, she had to push on just a little more and eek out as much energy from the creature as possible. Locked down on moves, all the Yamask could do was manage was launch another Shadow Ball in Apex's direction. Waiting out the Screech was all the ghost Pokémon had as an option. Andromeda hovered in the air, high-alert, waiting for Esme's next commands or Apex's next moves.
"apex," J called out over the roar of the storm and the creature's screeching, "dodge." he watched the pupitar keep up its howling, and spun about on its axis to avoid the shadow ball. the attack still skimmed one of its spikes, and the pupitar lunged forward for a bite amidst the sand.
This time, the Pupitar's fangs successfully sank into the Yamask's curiously incorporeal body. The Pokémon shrieked in pain, released a clumsy bout of a Shadow Ball, then melted onto the ground. Esme frowned as the Yamask lay, twitching rather pathetically. "So be it," the woman mused, shielding her eyes and mouth from the raging sandstorm within the walls of her gym. She reached for her belt, unhooked Andromeda's Pokéball, and finally returned the ghost Pokémon to its capsule for rest. The gym leader then proceeded to toss a second Pokéball into the air, and out came a cheerful-looking Haunter. "Achilles, you're up next," the woman said, never missing a beat. "Confuse Ray, then Shadow Punch. Don't you dare hold back."
the pupitar was smacked in the face by the mass of ghostly energy. it hissed angrily, even after andromeda was recalled. apex continued to hiss and seethe in rage as its forehead continued to smart. "tar," it grumbled, returning to J's side before the confuse ray struck it in the back.
<50 snaps out of confusion
apex whirled around, then fell over after knocking itself in the face and getting punched in the back by the shadow punch. it got up, spitting angrily, before J recalled it. the angrier apex got, the weaker it usually was.
he sent dust out. the lairon promptly set up a stealth rock barrier as it had in its previous gym battle.
