This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

She laid curled up in the back seat of the abandoned mini-cooper. A line of cars had been left abandoned along the bridge, and the scientist had resigned herself to sleep in one after a long walk through the bogs. The car was rusted inside out, and she'd left her golbat to hang out in the front seat with her mucky boots overnight to keep watch. But the road laid abandoned. Wherever the scourge were, they hadn't come out for her during the night. Maybe, she was just good at lying still like a mouse as the giants tread by.
In the mornings, it is difficult to wake, but Regina has a supply of coffee to look forward too as she finds her pack. She pours herself a lukewarm cup in her loneliness, lulled by the gentle breathing of her bat. She had crawled in here as the sun set into fire over the water.
With her little metal cup in hand, she kicked open the stuck door to see the barren road, and figure out how she was going to cross this broken bridge.
sophia had been checking on the scourge population in decima city for the past few weeks at different times of the day. species, gender, weight - none of the data that any other researcher might have been suicidal enough to gather under these conditions. she shouldn't fault them for not having the advantage of agent immunity. she arrived early, which was not a difficult feat for her. sophia had always been a light sleeper, and daniel's snores would always keep her up at night. she enjoys the serenity of the bridge, and sophia can't help but think of her dead brother. daniel, who will never wake her at 1am again. not personally, anyway.
she still rises at six in the morning. funny how old habits don't change, even after the need is gone.
the tactic with mordecai had worked rather well, actually. thus, the scourge froslass that is with her lingers under the bridge, where she can still hear if sophia runs into danger. if civilians are around, then she can play the victim of a scourge froslass. sophia is used to playing the victim. used to playing the victim whenever she buys grace for daniel's volatile temper ("poor child, orphaned at such a young age"). used to playing the victim for her professor to obtain a bigger budget for the hades project ("such a young, bright woman in pax - it would be a shame to let her go!"). unknowingly playing the victim for someone else's holy war.
her feet stop as she notices the lone woman staying at the edge of decima. staying at the end of the world, even if she might not realize it. the world that sophia had worked so hard to preserve.

Regina stretched herself along the door of the car, her arms leaning out the windows. It was almost by accident that her eyes tipped in the direction of the rear view mirror in which she saw a figure walking across the horizon of the bridge. The thin frame, silouetted in the dank morning air was very obscure, and so, she she shifted to obtain a clearer view.
She twitched into action, jerking herself around the car door and the sedans rusted body. Her nails clawed the failing paint. She knew what Hades Agent were - there couldn't be many - but she also knew her own allies were wandering about, and she needed more than ever a companion. Regina was deep in scourge territory, far deeper than she was capable of defending herself.
From behind the trunk of the car, she lifted hand and motioned with swift gestures for the woman to approach her.
maybe she should have brought another pokemon with her to throw people off, but they would never last long with fantine around. sophia doesn't complain, though. the froslass is the best bodyguard that she could have.
for now, she masquerades under melchior's protection. with the misfits underground so crowded and unsanitary, a woman with medical credentials wouldn't be too out of place.
sophia walks towards to the car, but by no means does she come too close. basic street smarts applied even in the instances of a toxic meltdown. she looks at the woman passively, waiting for her to speak.

The bridge was crumbling. You could see it in the spiderwebs of cracks of the pavement, the rust on the support cables, and the grit and dust that caked the abandoned autos that the woman circumvented. Regina wondered who she was, and how she could walk so easily out in the open.
"Is the way ahead safe?" she asked like a mouse peeping its head out of its hole.

"H-huh? But you just came from there? Are you some sort of ghost?" Regina blurted out. She looked around, skittishly, the measly joke made to get rid of how this woman's voice gave her the creeps.
"i followed a few rangers for safety this morning. they left." she can say that being friends with zahir has made her a far better liar than anyone would expect out of a rosenburg. "now i'm waiting for melchior to make his daily rounds"
so that sophia will have an excuse to go into the city without fantine trailing behind her, but she doesn't say that.

"Oh..." Regina managed. She pulled out her thermos, hesitantly. "You're the only one around here, but you aren't nervous? (Coffee? she motioned) I guess Melchior is dependable. A lot of people call him stupid back in Nerio for not high-tailing it out of here.... Could you help me get to Hespera? You know the way, right?" she blurted. "We could go together and watch each other's backs."
