This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.

The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

ismael's eyes were tightly shut by now, but as the amberwell's water lapped greedily at his feet, the skin started to return to a normal, healthier shade. whatever it was doing, it was making some sort of improvement.
the boy was suffering, though. he shook violently, almost thrashing in the water. it took self-control not to just let go and fall back into the water.
"Do you mind if I take a blood sample?" Neo asked, except it wasn't actually a request. She couldn't overpower many (read: any) people, but Athena could, and in his current state, Neo was pretty sure she could apply a syringe to Ismael without him putting up much of a fight.
"I'm a researcher," she explained. "I think you're having an allergic reaction of some sort. It's fascinating, really."
he pulled his feet out from the water, and hugged them to his chest. despite looking rather raw, most of his skin had seemed to gain a healthy glow to it. the amberwell was working its magick. "i'll have to decline. sorry."
Neo reached a hand into the water where Ismael had been. Nothing happened, nothing adverse anyway. Her hand might've been softer when it came out, her skin revitalized. Perhaps the Amberwell could cure teenage acne.
"Not a doctor," she agreed. "As I said, a researcher. If the waters here have offensive properties at all, it'd be worth looking into to combat the scourge."
ismael tried to summon what little he knew of medicines and how they worked.
"if it's like an antispetic, it cleanses wounds, and if the dark coloration of scourge is actually some sort of injury or side effect, it'll cleanse it just the same. i heard the water was used in vaccines."
"It's a key ingredient," Neo confirmed, because it wasn't really a secret.
"Antiseptics cleanse wounds; they don't really heal them, just prevent them from festering. Yet the waters are used in a vaccine, a preventative measure."
She tried again, because she'd really prefer to not let Athena stone edge a sickly boy. "Something in your body reacts to the water. I'm sure a sample of you blood would be fascinating. I'd only need a few drops. It'd be painless. Please."
"so it just prevents things from happening? not really an antibiotic kind of thing?" asked ismael, trying to wrap his head around the idea of the waters.
as he thought about the amberwell, something in him reacted. that voice in his head sounded almost excited, chattering away as it --
"... am i going to die from this illness, or whatever it is?"
Neo reached into her purse, took out a small, silver case. It looked like a pencil case, but from within she drew a syringe wrapped in plastic. "It's very clean," she promised.
She gathered her thoughts, trying to find the simplest way to explain. "We don't know for sure. It seems like it speeds up natural healing--physical wounds and other ailments--like a pokemon center that works for humans too.
"But that means it's quite strange that it works as a vaccine. A vaccine is normally a weakened version of the disease itself. The body can beat up the weak disease, so when the real thing comes, it's already learned how to fight it off. But the eos vaccine doesn't contain the hades virus at all. We just call it a vaccine because it works similarly in that it teaches the body how to defeat the virus."
"so these waters are infested with a weaker version of the virus, is that it? it mutated into something stronger after getting immune to something in here, right?"
