This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"Yes, but after I meet them, they always seem to come back stronger." She shook her head, displeased at the thought or perhaps at her cards, even though her luck had generally been good. Probably both. "They're like us. They get stronger--except scourge pokemon get much stronger."
J didn't like the sound of that. it felt like things were going on hard mode all of a sudden. though considering the sieges, things were probably getting kicked up a notch. scourge pokémon weren't mindless, then.
"yes and no."
he stacked a few chips atop each other. "i came and left. took over santiago's job, haven't been fighting as much scourge." he started building a second tower of chips. "hired stefan."
J's single laugh was quiet, but there was no smile.
"he lives up to his skill list that says dislikeable." which was precisely was he was hired. stefan could draw ire while he lounged about.
"What happened to Santiago anyway? Lack of business kill him? Or was it the scourge?"

Wait. Why would anyone hire Stefan? Why would anyone sign up for that? What was Stefan even good for? "A poor decision. I hope he's been worth the trouble, whatever you have him doing. Something harmless, maybe."
for once, J beat neo in points. the dealer still sucked. the trainer decided to take his leave from the table before things got too suspicious for the owner of the casino.
"a bit of both. bad timing and overconfidence, i think."
J cashed in his chips and had the money credited to his account.
"i think it was," J admitted. intelligence was never his forte. "his job is to be a face everyone loves to hate. he does it well enough."
"Soon. Not sure when, but maybe a few days. I need to visit the Amberwell, take care of some injuries, but otherwise... I'm ready. It won't take long. I can't imagine Thalia and Mordecai will delay either."
A smile pulled at her lips, but it didn't quite make it. "But take a few days. Do anything you want to do before you die."
