This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

a knock resounded through the laboratory at the crack of dawn. ignatius had just arrived in juno, and immediately went for the lab. he was going to get a starter pokémon, damn if he had to lie about his ties to eos. getting a pokémon shouldn't be this difficult, he thought.
"professor cypress, i apologize for the disturbance, but i would rather we hurry through this instead of dawdling."
cypress is barely alive ontop of his stacks of papers. much like his mod, actually. he lifts his head groggily and adjusts his crooked glasses. "h-huh? oh...oh yes, of course! right away!"
he trips once as he scrambles for the door. only once. quite an impressive feat, actually. the alakazam takes pity on him and uses his psychic powers to open the door.
this man is the twentieth person to ask for a pokemon that day. cypress doesn't even really bother checking the list anymore. "i'm sorry for the mess, i just...sorry, no dawdling. yes, er. what's your name?"
the tray of pokeballs that sits on cypress' desk contains the following pokemon.
ignatius was unaware of what transpired behind the door. as soon as the door opened, he gave the duo a small nod, and entered. "grimm, ignatius," he said, handing cypress a name card just in case. it was helpful to have a stack of them on hand for those who were in academic positions. as a researcher, it was always useful to get his name known. "one of the grimms from sol city."
the grimms were a particularly infamous family. everyone had died a mysterious death, one after the other, once every two years. ignatius wanted to escape his fate, and had chosen to leave the house at the age of sixteen. he had survived.
the card seems to calm cypress' nerves a little. "...the grimms? um -- oh, i'm sorry." an academic of his age would have certainly heard of the grimms and their misfortune. his sympathy overcomes any potential suspicion that he might have had. "i'm r-really glad to see that you're h-helping our cause, then. especially after all that has...happened"
he winces. he hopes that he is not sending another grimm to his death.
"b-but yes, of course."
the alakazam levitates the single pokeball out of the case and stops it in front of ignatius.
ignatius's lips thinned into a smile. all that had happened was nothing in comparison to what he tasted after being free of fate's clutches. "i wish for the best," he told cypress, placing a hand on his shoulder after the professor winced. easily, he straightened the man's posture and gave him a nod. "thank you for your help."
he accepted the pokéball, released the tyrunt, and scanned it with his pokédex.
device still in hand, ignatius turned back to the professor while the tyrunt tottered around.
"do you mind if i scan your alakazam? or your other pokémon?" he gave the laboratory a sweeping glance. rattata littered the laboratory, and he could scan them later. the alakazam was a valuable entry.
"um...no, go ahead! it's really something to see a researcher who's so through in his studies." cypress still looked rather dead on his feet, however. "...d-do you need anything else of me?"
ignatius took it as his cue to scan the alakazam. seeing how compliant cypress was at the moment, ignatius smiled and nodded to affirm the professor's thoughts. "do you have other pokémon? or i can return another day to scan them," he said, snapping his pokédex shut.
as if on cue, the gothitelle enters the room in which the two men were conversing. "t-this is ms. sybill. i don't think she would mind it at all if you took her entry." the gothitelle did not look affronted at all by the prospect.
"professor, you really are too kind," said ignatius as he clapped the good professor on the shoulder and took down the gothitelle's entry. "it's a pleasure to meet you, ms sybill." the researcher smiled, giving her a nod of greeting before turning to some of the rattata on the floor.
"hello there, little ones."
they scattered, before staring at ignatius expectantly.
"do you care for them, ms sybill?" ignatius asked, very calmly overlooking cypress as he addressed the gothitelle.
cypress jumps a little at the physical contact, but he manages an uneasy smile. he's also a little too used to being ignored. he wonders if this is his cue to go back to napping at his desk.
gothitelle looks up at ignatius. she gives him a curt nod. she's really acknowledging the lifespan that she's reading, moreso than his actual question. <be careful out there.>
