This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.

The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

it was better to face things head-on than to walk away from it. J had survived many a challenge thread and faced down scourge, but nothing seemed to be worse than challenging habiba, master of the fire-type. he suspected this battle was going to be very painful for him. while he wasn't bothered by the lack of oxygen in the air, he was bothered by how badly he could potentially fuck up in this battle.
he wondered if habiba accepted repeat challengers.
Habiba does not have a pokemon team yet. This will not prevent her from being a horrible human being with an ego the size of Mt. Aurae itself.
Like a madman, she had been meditating under a waterfall. In the winter. Atop Mt. Aurae. It was practically an icefall. She stirred from her meditation, her challenger-sense tingling like an obnoxious doorbell.
"A trainer?" she asked, as soon as she saw him approach. Habiba rolled her eyes--this was a waste of her time.
With the patience of a schoolteacher to a small, small, very dumb child, she said, "Shouldn't you be busy saving the region from those evil scourge?"
"your seal would be helpful," said J, "or we can fight scourge together."
he was certain that fighting scourge together was the better option, even if habiba wasn't exactly happy to do so. it would definitely beat fighting her, at any rate. J stood where he was, some distance away from her, and waited. he didn't care if he was interrupting her meditation. the seal was important to him, as it provided him with valuable defenses against the scourge.

It turns out Habiba does have a team because King is a god among men.
"Fight scourge? Eos is doing a perfectly fine job on its own. Do you see Serkan fighting the scourge? When he does, let me know."
On one hand, it was true that the scourge was mostly contained, eventually thrown out of Nerio--emphasis on eventually. On the other hand, the fight might be going much more swimmingly if Habiba were willing to leave her mountain.
She had half a mind to walk away, but answering challenges was a duty of the Elite 4. Shirking it would be... crass. Lightly, Habiba tossed a pokeball up and down in her hand as she thought about whether today was a shitty enough day so far for her to be crass.
She sighed. The pokeball released a camerupt, and she shrugged, partially in apathy but mostly in resignation. Why did she have to have standards? "If you can earn a seal, then perhaps I will remember your name."

J wanted to bring up cura, but did not. that was something best left to history to tell. the less he had to do with the official news, the better. J watched habiba send in her camerupt, and frowned. fuck, no. he knew what this thing was capable of doing. he'd fought a scourge version of it before and ... no. just ... no.
he retrieved sigma's pokéball. an excadrill emerged from the light.
"i'll try my best."

...Cura hadn't happened yet. Or something. Time is fluid here, it moves in a circle, or perhaps a sphere, or whatever shape you'd damn well like, as long as it's not a linear line. It's all that dreaming these Kohaku folks do.
