This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

The words ‘abandoned’ and ‘foreclosed’ meant nothing to Deryn. All she saw was a space empty of people and, at this time of day, of Pokemon. It was perfect; Deryn wasnn’t a big fan of interaction these days.
Her Magikarp flopped on the ground. It wasn’t strictly a capture – actually, that old Fisherman Bob, or whatever his name was, had given it to her. She would have kicked it right then and there back into the water if she hadn’t a clue about its evolution.
For a moment she leaned against the wall near the door, until she realised that said wall was likely grimy and gross. Ew. Deryn moved away and tried to dust her back with her hands. Great. Nothing yuck better have stuck there; Deryn hated washing her clothes in the Pokemon Centre where anyone could walk in on her doing the chore.
She was so preoccupied with trying to brush whatever off her shirt that she failed to notice that her Magikarp, contrary to what Deryn thought, did not like flopping around on the ground, and neither did she notice someone else enter the warehouse.

A ranger's job was to keep people and Pokémon safe, and that meant checking out anywhere that caught her attention. She had spotted the other girl heading into the warehouse, and while she knew that it was entirely possible that she would be able to take care of herself, Céleste felt it was her job- no her duty to make sure that the girl was safe.
She headed in, Titania watching behind her from her shoulder, peering around the gloom. She spotted the faint figure of the girl in the corner, watching her Magikarp flop around a little desperately. She seemed to be alone, but it wouldn't hurt to check, would it? At the very least, she might be able to make a friend or get some information.
She pulled out her styler, and, a little haltingly, drew the electric sign. The building filled with light, clearing away the gloom and most likely capturing the attention of the other person here.
"Hello there, my name is Céleste, and this is Titania," she said, gesturing to the little Dedenne who was glancing around the now bright room for danger. "I'm an Eos Ranger. Might I ask who you are?"
All of a sudden there was a blinding light. Deryn’s hands immediately went to cover her eyes and her Magikarp, who was unfortunate in that it had no hands or even long fins, had to squeeze it’s eyes shut to try and block out the offending light.
They were both blinded for a moment, and even when their eyes began to recover it was a slow one.
“Holy mother of—” Deryn swore. “You tryna blind us here?!” Her vision still hadn’t completely returned, and the best she saw of the ranger was a vague outline which became clearer as the seconds went by. When she spotted a small shape which had to be the Pokemon who used Flash, Deryn turned her attention to glaring at it instead.
Ugh, it was such a tiny thing too. Little tiny Pokemon shouldn’t be able to do something that effective, she thought. She muttered something that roughly conveyed the same meaning: “Little rat.”
The Magikarp began to resume its flopping, and even tried glubbing something to get Deryn’s attention. It wanted to go back in its Pokeball. Deryn ignored it. She was still busy glaring at the Pokemon. She could see it was a Dedenne now.
“So what’s the big idea you little pipsqueak?” she interrogated the Dedenne, completely unaware that she should be interrogating it’s human partner instead. “Try anything funny again, and I’ll have one of my Pokemon sit on you – and it’ll be a guaranteed one-hit-KO!”

Céleste had rather forgotten how bright she could make a room. She shielded her own eyes from the brightness, blinking the spots out of her eyes as her vision cleared. Her attention was immediately drawn by the woman bearing down on Titania, who had scurried down to investigate her. Céleste immediately scooped her up and held her close in her arms.
"I offer my apologies, I was the one who brightened the room, I rather forgot how bright it would become. I hope your vision is still alright?" she said, before glancing behind Deryn to the Magikarp behind her. "And that of your pokémon?"
Titania scrambled up onto Céleste's shoulder. "I don't like her," she said.
"That's hardly fair, you've barely met her," replied Céleste quietly.
Titania twitched her tail. "Did you perhaps meet someone who wasn't the girl who just insulted and threatened me?"
Céleste didn't reply, turning her attention back to Deryn. "May I be of any assistance?"
Typical of a little, baby Pokemon to have to be protected by its trainer. Deryn lost a little more respect for the Dedenne, even as she realised how silly she herself was acting. Whatever, Deryn wasn’t calm and reasonable and she knew it. That’s why, when the Dedenne’s trainer offered an apology Deryn did not accept it. She didn’t even acknowledge it.
She was about to rip into the trainer too but stopped when the other woman actually sounded concerned. That was weird. Weirdly nice. In fact, everything the girl said fell under the category of weirdly nice. Deryn wasn’t used to people who didn’t bite back and for a moment was stunned into silence.
The moment quickly passed and she was back to herself. “Yeah, it’s alright, but it’s not perfect,” Deryn snapped her answer. She didn’t think to check on her Magikarp, but it’s sight was more or less back to normal. “We’re fine. As long as little pipsqueak there isn’t talking shi—”
The Magikarp glubbed loudly.
“Pipe down, the people are talking.”
sylvespurr omg i think i just figured out the pun behind your name. instead of sylvester the cat you're sylvespurr the espurr??

Céleste was beginning to see Titania's point. This stranger wasn't overly polite, either to her pokémon or the person talking to her. She frowned slightly when the girl paused, considering whether something might be wrong, but the moment passed almost immediately. She raised an eyebrow at the insult to Titania, but all thoughts of that flew out of the window as the Magikarp glubbed at them.
"Perhaps you should ensure your companion is doing alright?" she said. "It seems to be attempting to attract your attention, and I doubt it would do so for no reason."
Titania jumped down from Céleste's shoulder, and scampered over to the Magikarp, giving it a slightly concerned sniff.
dizzy haha, nothing that clever, it's a combination of sylveon and espurr, two of my favourite pokemon (amongst many others :3)
The girl’s (she must be a ranger, Deryn guessed, judging from the Pokemon move and talk) suggestion sounded ridiculous. “Oh don’t mind him,” Deryn said dismissively with a wave of her hand. “He always does that.”
You could see the hurt in the Magikarp’s eyes.
But Deryn couldn’t. She hadn’t known the Pokemon long enough to have even figured out what it ate let alone pick up on its emotions. As far as she was concerned the flopping was something the Magikarp did 24/7 and the glubbing was just it being talkative. While others were talking, dammit. Some etiquette.
The Magikarp’s glubbing quietened as it was noticed by the Dedenne. It looked at the mousey Pokemon with hopeful eyes. “So you’re a ranger then?” Deryn continued, as oblivious as ever to her Magikarp.
sylvespurr so close yet to far T^T at least i got espurr right
"Yes," she said, rather firmly. "And as a ranger, I must insist that you see to your Pokémon." That was a ranger thing, right? Either way, she couldn't leave the poor thing to flop uncomfortably without saying something. It was just poor manners to leave a pokémon unhappy while nothing more important than a conversation was happening. "Titania, how is the Magikarp?"
"Rather upset, I would expect," she replied, running her tail along the fish's body in an attempt at petting the poor thing. "I can't imagine she's known it long, there doesn't appear to be much of an emotional connection. That said, it does seem mostly healthy."
Céleste looked up at Deryn. "I must ask, this Magikarp is yours, is it not?"
dizzy [ALSO I'M SO SORRY THIS TOOK SO LONG I went away and then school happened -_-]
Deryn wanted to laugh. See to her Pokemon? What was there to see? The Magikarp was perfectly fine flailing around on the ground down there. It was what he did and, as far as she had figured, what made him happy. He was perfectly fine down there!
Well, he was fine until the little rodent went up to him. Deryn narrowed her eyes at it – what was it up to? She didn’t trust that it touched the Magikarp with its tail. Jeez, did it forget it had hands?
Deryn looked back at the ranger. Well, wasn’t this one a bright cookie – of course the Magikarp belonged to her! “Yeah it belongs to me. Wasn’t that – oh I don’t know – obvious?”
sylvespurr it's totally fine! school does that to people. btw be sure to check out the rangers unite thread over by the plot pages.
