This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

First impressions meant a lot, from person to place to pokemon alike, he truly believed that. There were books, stacked up high in tall, wooden bookshelves and the smell halfway between fresh oak and the withering smell of mildew. Jayden wrinkled his nose, gave a sneeze into the sleeve of his button-down shirt and scowled, thinking of the uncomfortable nostalgia this place offered and ticking off the reasons he still disliked thinking about it too much.
The elevator gave him a growing sense of claustrophobia, the twisting of his stomach not helping the upward ascent (or decent, to his numb senses it felt the same). And he wasn't looking forward to doing it a second time, so his mind calmly diverted his attention away from that subject and forced him, for once, to try to 'live in the present'.
He'd managed to calm the sweat on his brow, though, as ground stopped moving beneath him and doors pried themselves open. "Hey." He said, stuffing both hands in his pockets. "I'm here for a gym challenge."
"into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely."

"Well hey there - you're a trainer aren'tcha?!" The gym leader appeared, snapping a books shut with a work out towel behind his bare neck. He looked the fellow over with large, eager eyes, already pleased with how well put-together this one is. "You already look like a real pro, but it's what's on the inside that counts! You can call me Jasper - now let's get on with the challenge!"
After giving this guy enormous pats on the back, Jasper ran to the other side of the gym. "You better give me your all now!" He chucked a pokeball out with a powerful arm, and the fossil pokemon appeared, skidding to a halt from the momentum of the throw. The Shieldon snorted, irritated by the enthusiasm. His metabolism wasn't as fast as his master's, and he lumbered over to the center of the field with a patient gait.
"Thanks." He allowed himself a smirk at Jasper's comment. The compliment might've been anything from genuine to polite sportsmanship, but it helped him shrug off the last bouts of tension this place gave him. "It's Jayden." And he was grateful for that.
He fished a sphere out his pockets, balancing it between index and thumb like he always did and watched the gym leader with flickering pupils and a calculating gaze. "You can judge that how you want." Admittedly, this felt strange, something he'd never done before. What made it strange wasn't the setting or the battlefield, or even the surroundings, but the gym leader himself, and the conversations he hadn't taken into account because he hadn't expected to have anything other than a cold, hard battle. Yet here he was.
Marshtomp appeared with a cry of its own name, regarding the shieldon with curious black eyes. "Mud Bomb." To which it burbled a reply and puffed out its cheeks, coughing up a large brown mass of muck at its opponents, and that was that.

"Hey! HEY!" Jasper shouted from the other end of the room, trying very hard to project his voice. "This is probably your first time! So the most important thing is you've gotta trust yourself and the bonds you made with you're pokemon!"
Peridot stepped to the side, narrowly missing the mud bomb as it splattered next to her legs. She leaped off to attack. Her short stubby legs burst with a surprising speed.
"A water pokemon - wise choice indeed!"
Shieldon dogged mud bomb. Shieldon used metal sound. Shieldon used tackle.
"Yeah, I got that." He nodded, plugging one ear briefly with his pinkie finger because Jasper was, admittedly, the loudest of any trainer he'd come into contact with, but if anything, he was practical. Winning wasn't all about winning, it was about the confidence and belief that he could win. He could go about this a million and one ways, but doubt didn't fit into that equation.
"Dodge it." The marshtomp crouched and rolled sideways, letting the sound bounce off a back wall as it raised two flippers to crash against shieldon's plated skull. "Mud shot." Getting egotistical in the midst of battle usually wasn't usually his thing, but jasper was giving him many, many free passes that were getting increasingly difficult to ignore.

The Shieldon landed the tackle, grunting with effort, but the mud-shot pressed it away. The two pokemon crashed together like football players, shoving each other with their strength. "It's good to have strength, but let's test your plan!" This kid was a real bull-whip, returning what was given. The gym leader smiled confidently at his spark.
They weren't the biggest rocks in the world - mostly because Jayden had often forced him to lift ones far bigger - but they were sharp, pointed precise rocks that cut Marshtomp's flippers as it held both of them up to defend itself with. The dual type muttered something under its breath, weaving this way and that to avoid landing in a position where they could hit some vital spot, like an eye.
"Bide." Because wasn't that what being strong was about? Not only about power needed to match blow for blow, but also having the will to take it, accept it, endure.. Having something of a vague, outlined plan in his head but also making it flexible, because there was always change that he couldn't stop.
Marshtomp positioned itself into a squat, narrowed its eyes and fell silent, motionless.

Jasper's eyes widened unexpectedly, as if he had caught site of something shiny in a pile a rocks. While Peridot used rock slide again. It hadn't made a move, after all, and took the first blow like a sitting duck.
"Waiting it out, yeah? A good strategy - Let's see how it's executed!"
Another shower of rocks clattered onto the marshtomp's hide. With no way of movement or defense this time, it closed its eyes, body gaining a faint white outline. After some consideration and debate it grumbled something, then shifted the angle of its stance the slightest bit so the stones clattered, rough, off its back.
"We'll see." Jayden shrugged his shoulders, not sure what Jasper meant by that statement. Marshtomp wasn't exactly the easiest to control when moves like this pushed it over the brink.

The battle continued, Peridot throwing itself at the Marshtomp with a tackle. Jasper watched at the edge of his seat. He didn't have much to say, so he looked over the quality of the Marshtomp's training, taking in the details of how it moved and held Peridot in it's fierce gaze.
His own Shieldon lunged with all its might, attempting to bash its head hard at the swamp pokemon.
The glow was getting brighter, slightly more prominent as its gaze became more focused and stance tensed up. Marshtomp was shaking, and as the shieldon's hard head came into contact with its body it exploded outward and pounced on the opponent, unleashing that pent-up energy.
Taking a few paces back it braced itself, jaws opening wide as a flood of water rushed out at breakneck speeds.

In a burst of power, a bide and waterfall were unleashed upon the Shieldon. Water combined with the fierce, waiting energy that had become pent up within the Marshtomp threw aside the Shieldon so that it washed up beside its trainer unable to get up. Jasper looked at the trainer with an impressed, bright expression - only disappointed that the Shieldon harder hits than he would have liked.
"What a combo! You've really impressed me, but Agate is one a whole other level now - let's continue."
Quickly, he threw out another Pokeball, and a brightly colored bird leaped out. It flew in circles around the Marshtomp, pumping itself up with energy with a chaotic double team before swooping down to inflict a bite.
There was water - everywhere, and a lot of it. Water that drowned out his vision briefly, and it was only when the shieldon disappeared and a bird stood in its place that he knew to be stronger, even before Jasper spoke. "Let's." Jayden smirked, eyes trailing over to marshtomp. Panting slightly, little cuts littering its hide. But still standing.
"You've got to focus, alright?" The creature nodded, black eye shining as they followed the archen around in circles and pounced, last minute, out of the way of those razor sharp fangs. Then, it reared up and shot another blast of water back, before the truth could seek refuge back in the sea of chaos.

The swooped with great cursives strokes in the air, avoiding the beam of water that crashed towards it. Its speed was incredible as it rebounded. The great and terrible bird launched itself at the marshtomp, unleashing a quick attack and a bite.
Jasper was pretty into the fight. He shouted cheers at the Archen, while also telling it to not be too rough.
Two attacks, in succession - without hesitation, deadly in their precision. They both hit the marshtomp, one after another and the creature halted, crashing down on the ground and staying there, panting slightly as Jayden recalled it without a word.
"Thunder wave, shock wave." He called them, one after the other as the sphere spun in the air for the moment and hovered there, white fading into red fading into black, a horse that whinnied and clipped its feet on the ground, then lowered its head and fired off two bright, yellow sparks.
