This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"I'll be fine," he said to the concerned shrink in the passenger seat as he left the police car. It'd been a long ride from Nerio City, and she'd fussed the entire way.. "I won't kill anybody out there, I promise. Just scourge."
That was a joke. He was pretty sure that was a joke, anyway. The shrink was pretty sure too, by the looks of it.
Griff watched as the car pulled away.
To his credit, he only considered running for his freedom for a second. (It was a good second--sweet, like a pleasant dream.) After that second passed, he walked up to the building. If he was resigned to his fate, he didn't look it. He looked like an aspiring ranger, out to do his part to defend his region.
He entered the Ranger's Union as if it were the most natural thing in the world. He felt ill at ease. He should've run. They probably would've caught him, but he'd taken bigger risks before.
"Morning," Griff said as he approached what looked like woman preparing for war. Sa'di, if his information was right.
He was out of practice, but he smiled--charming, roguish, and genuinely natural. "Eos sent me. They thought I could die for a good cause."
she had been told to keep a close eye on this new recruit. as if sa'di wasn't going to anyway, like every other aspiring ranger who passes through the union's doors. they deserve at least that much if they were going to commit themselves to the less-than-glamourous fight against the scourge.
sa'di hands her stack of papers to the pachirisu as soon as the door opens to let a young man and a gust of wind inside. "long trip?" it was only going to get longer, if the situation in bacchus was any indication. "listen, i appreciate that you've got a lot less cotton in your ears than the last person that i sent away, but fatalism isn't going to do you any favors. so chin up"
her lucario walks in just then with a small lineup of pokemon. "i'm not the one who's going to be out there holding your hand. one of these pokemon are going to be the one standing between you and the scourge, so better hope that at least one of them likes you"
"I hope so too," he replied lightly, with a smile--one that faded a bit too soon.
Griff circled the pokemon. Some of them approached him, and those were the pokemon he petted amicably, even let the gible chatter at him for a good ten minutes, but otherwise he disregarded them. He wouldn't trust anyone that trusted him.
It took him a moment before he realized that a charmander had circled him once already--watching, observing. Griff left her to her own devices, until later she finally sat down next to him, not saying anything.
"Hi," Griff said. It wasn't much of a greeting, neither warm nor cold, but just a bit curious. No pretenses. He wasn't going to lie to someone he'd take to battle. "You wanna kill some scourge?"
The charmander swished her tail, as if thinking it over, before she nodded.
sa'di watches his interaction with the pokemon with interest. she is surprised when he turns away most of them -- beginning rangers were typically more desperate than that, eager for any pokemon that would accept them.
"if you are sure" she nods to the charmander. "then i wish you good luck, ranger."
