This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"No enemy will prevent my passing. An unstoppable force will go through an unmovable wall."
Hunter approached the inner part of the city. Hasty people were quick to move and quick to stop in a moments notice. The trainer had a poor sense of direction in the town since he'd only passed around the city on his way to Juno. Now that he was inside Juno, getting accustomed to it all would be a pain. Lucky for him, he'd caught a number of pokemon on his way. Since he began his journey with Youkai, a litwick, he'd seen an captured Soul Eater, a Honedge, he'd also captured Ayakashi, a Driftloon, and then been given Lacklife, a Sableye, by the Lab Assistant Jo. So far ghost types were the only creatures he could stand. His in particular were very connected to him. Youkai by far the most synchronized. Each time he thought about the ghost he had the desire to call it out. It no doubt wanted to get out of the pokeball. But, Hunter wouldn't let it do that. Not until it was stronger and could float. There was no reason for a waddling little candle to try and keep up with human walking.
In the city, that sort of difficulty would be atrociously disadvantageous to the Litwick. Hunter would keep his pokemon locked in their pokeballs for the time being. They'd need their rest for the gym battle ahead. Each of them would need to play a part in the battle. The trainer heard the gym housed rock types. Strong in defense and physical feats. Surely Youkai and Ayakashi would be having difficulty. As for the other two, Soul Eater and Lacklife, being half Steel and half Dark respectively, wouldn't share that same weakness.
If only Soul Eater knew an offensive Steel type move. That would solve the issue with the first gym. Unfortunately, Hunter did not know when Soul Eater would learn a steel move. Fury Cutter would only be useful after several attacks. Having it dodge and evade while using attacks would be the bigger issue in battle. That sort of strategy couldn't be maintained for too long. Now with Lacklife, Nightshade would be the most useful as that move increased in power with the pokemon. Zenheadbutt would perhaps be useful. It was a psychic move yet still physical in use. It would be average strength because of typing but... not good enough. What Hunter really needed was a water type pokemon. Perhaps a grass too. Since ghost types naturally flocked to his party that left just a few options left. Hunter had never seen a water ghost or a grass ghost type.
Capturing them within the day would be impossible. Now as for training his current party... that was possible. All he had to do was find someone to battle.
He'd been a trainer in the past, if you could call what he'd done pokemon training. Griff had been a vault breaker and con artist, and he'd kept a few pokemon with him to help with that. They weren't just tools though, they had been friends.
They were dead now, of course, that or they'd become scourge. Potentially, they were still alive and healthy, but the chances of that were slim to none. Griff wasn't about to get his hopes up for something like that. He only hoped that they'd died swiftly and painlessly--they deserved a long life, but failing that, a quick death was all he could ask of fate.
He had a new companion now--two of them: Shyvana, who seemed sweet and charming, and the police tracker around his ankle. The latter was less sweet and charming. Still, it kept him on his best behavior, although a part of Griff resented that the cops thought he'd run off rather than fight they scourge like he'd promised to. (It wasn't that he felt a duty to fight the scourge. He would've run, but there was nowhere to run to. Any fool could see that.)
Excitedly, Shyv gestured at a pokemon trainer down the street. The charmander pranced over, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed--and eager for a fight. <Char!> she cried, and waved for his attention.
"Looking for a battle trainer?" he asked, all practiced smiles, but seemingly genuine. It was an act, but he didn't feel any animosity towards the stranger anyhow. "If not, I'm afraid my charmander wants one. I'm inclined to spoil her if I can, so if you don't mind--how about a quick match?"
"No enemy will prevent my passing. An unstoppable force will go through an unmovable wall."
Looking to see someone talking to him, Hunter turned his head but couldn't lose that angry expression. Noticing the charmander happily calling out and looking right at him, Hunter thought for a second. The best choice against the fire type was clearly not Soul Eater. The best option was Lacklife due to his wider range of moves without a weakness to fire.
"Very well. One on one." Hunter pulled out a pokeball and then let out Lacklife the Sableye. If this pokemon did well enough then surely the gym leaders weren't that far out of its reach.

"So good of you to oblige," Griff replied. This was Kohaku, where battles were common enough--just like any region in the Pokemon World--but these were hard times.
Shyvana neatly tumbled out of the zen headbutt's way, carefully guarding the fire on her tail and she went for a spin. She pulled herself upright and her will faltered under the leer. She glanced over her shoulder back at Griff.
Honestly, he wasn't used to a straight up battle. He was used to daring escapes and distractions. Barring that, he was used to cheating, but now he was supposed to turn a new page. He hesitated.
"Start with dragon dance."

"No enemy will prevent my passing. An unstoppable force will go through an unmovable wall."
The opponent had dodged the Zen Headbutt; however, not the Leer. Thinking it was strange, Hunter watched as the opponent commanded a dragon dance. Surely that was setting up for something stronger. Perhaps an onslaught of fire type moves from the charmander as it would most likely lack any non-fire type moves that weren't normal. Hunter wondered for a brief moment then watched as Lacklife reacted. Perhaps if he could get the charmander to flinch...

The zen headbutt sent Shyvana tumbling backward, this time much less neatly. Resolutely, she stood back up. Griff was pretty sure she was acting better than she actually felt. He'd never considered himself an ace trainer--as witnessed by him becoming a ranger--but he knew zen headbutt was a strong attack for a young pokemon.
Shyvana charged in. Scratch wouldn't work, so Griff hardly needed to tell her what attack to use. Breathing fire, she sent two lashes of embers at the sableye.
"Smokescreen," Griff suggested, and Shyv followed suit by spitting out a dark cloud of smoke.

And that was it! Hunter saw it, that hit connect with the charmander. Surely that took a lot of the opponent's pokemon. Hunter believe that at the very least. It would be high time for him to see just how well Lacklife would be useful to him. The first ember came at Lacklife but in a moment Hunter ordered it to dodge and luckily enough it did! But after landing from an acrobatic tumble a second ember blasted it in the face. Hunter's nostrils flared for a moment.
The charmander released a smokescreen but then Lacklife's ability kicked in. Keen Eye prevented the loss of accuracy. Not that it mattered anyway. The charmander wouldn't last that long. Hunter's lip locked in the corner, showing off a triumphant grin.

He made it work, alright. Shyvana took the second blow, and this time when she went flying back, she didn't stand back up. Griff wasn't too worried--these things happened in battle.
Griff recalled charmander to her pokeball. He needed to make a trip to the pokemon center now. Ah, well, Shyv had wanted the battle, and it was a decent learning experience.
"Well done," he said, not entirely sure if he was supposed to offer a handshake or something for congratulations. Wasn't that what trainers did? He hesitated for a second, but then he walked up to the trainer and extended a hand. "Good luck in the future. ...And stay safe out there."
"No enemy will prevent my passing. An unstoppable force will go through an unmovable wall."
Lacklife had proved itself in the moment. Hunter recognized it as a useful pokemon that would be useful for later battles. Allowing it to rest, Hunter returned to the pokeball. (Chance of infection (90 or higher] 11UK9hq8 ). Hunter noticed the opponent was extending out his hand. Sportsmanship. Hunter offered out his hand for one firm pump then let go right after. The formality was simple, yet rather weird. Hunter viewed it as a way to say that both are still on an equal level. Yet he didn't see that as true. It'd just been proven otherwise.
"See you around. I expect that next time your Charmander won't be golden but instead black when I see it. I look forward to comparing the growth of our pokemon." There was a half truth in that. Hunter did not really look forward to seeing the opponent again. He didn't care for making friends. However, Hunter did want to battle a Charzard one day. Lacklife wasn't going to evolve but still it'd be an excellent rematch. After the handshake Hunter headed toward the docks.
