This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

she landed crashing through the trees, her hand pressing vigorously against her raw shoulder. thorns poked her, twigs scraped her, but yves doesn't care. this was her land. her once beautiful land.
in a rapid roll she ends up on the beach, pulling her body off of the sand and ripping her mask off. her face is caked in brown and red, smeared with dirt, blood, sweat and death. or at least the smell of it. hope is probably off somewhere trying to find food. because i can't get any for him, yves decides, brushing herself off. she starts walking, although she has no destination. she's walking away, really, because as an agent, even as a person, she doesn't know where to go.
but somewhere not too far there is another girl like her, and she is fighting her ass off. yves doesn't really know why, but she is. there is a woman in that building who is doing something; actually doing something. so yves turns and reluctantly lies on her back in the sand. she's going to meet wonder woman.
this is the first time she's done something. toska

physis has been practicing the psychic sign, so her landing was much less turbulent. she did not see this as a blessing, however. it simply means that she knows exactly how weak she is. how much stronger she needs to become before she can stop running away from these enemies.
although this whole incident would not have happened like this if batin had not let thalia escape at decima. pax institute was a pointless loss. physis hates pointless losses.
the froslass is the first to find the girl who is lying in the sand. physis is not too far behind. it might have taken her longer than five seconds to identify the woman, but not when the mask is in her hand. a basic mistake, really.
yves lies there for a while. her body doesn't move except for the occasional twitch of her shoulder. the sand feels really nice. she'd be okay just staying here forever. on her sand. in her wondrous wild kingdom.
but someone finally decides to join her. yves eyes flitter open. she wasn't sleeping, only resting. that's what her dad used to say in the morning. yves almost ignores physis. call it revenge if you want, but the keyword here is "almost." this is the woman that did not even give her a glance in the heat of battle, this is the woman who does nothing to make her feel safe. scratch that. she doesn't need anyone else to help her. that's her second decision made.
yet still, she can't help but scan the woman with her greyscale eyes. it's also tempting to not reply. but she does anyway. "i am alright." yves says. she looks at her shoulder. then at physis. then at her shoulder again. yves is sure that the stranger understands what she is trying to get across here. toska

"put that mask on, then." physis is still helmeted herself, having had no opportunity to remove it. "fantine is not eating your liver right now. that's enough for most eos trainers to identify you as an agent these days"
she remembers a time when there was such a thing as benefit of the doubt. not anymore. they're also getting stronger. pax lake is less of a safe haven as it has once been. physis regrets that.
"i suggest that we move. where is the sableye?" physis does not miss her message, but she cares little for the same flesh wounds that sophia might have once fretted over. she is not completely unaware of the dangers of open wounds, however. physis tosses the girl a small bottle of disinfectant that she had picked up from the institute. "what do i call you?"
yves raises her mask to her face and stares at it for a moment. she longs to keep it off, to let people identify her, to let people find her. to let people close the case on merci castellanos, scottie castellanos's bastard daughter. but she obeys. she obeys like she always does. her face is hidden now, per physis's demand.
"i believe you," she mutters. "that was proven to me in there." yves lies through her teeth. she knows her little trick would've worked if physis might have yielded. but physis deserves respect. so yves doesn't dare try to patronize her.
hope? she honestly does not know where he is. he often roams free- that's just in his nature. "...somewhere." she answers honestly with an apathetic sigh. "he runs off every once in a while. but he always returns." yves gets to her feet slowly, her boots crunching against the sand. move? where do they move? where will they go? yves can travel alone if she feels it's right, but she never knows what direction is best.
"...you still have not given me any alias. i would also advise you not to try that trick again" physis says it clinically, as if she is the physician that she had once dreamed of becoming. "not in pax. the only humans left in pax are usually dead or agents."
not that physis didn't give her brownie points for coming up with it. she had once used a similar tactic to better success in decima town, all those months ago. then again, mordecai did not seem too difficult to deceive.
"keep him close." her froslass always stays ahead of them, a vigilant lookout. "open spaces are dangerous. high scourge concentrations can act as a buffer between yourself and eos. fantine is still injured, so it is best that we take some form of refuge."
trust. that's something that yves does not usually have. when you trust people, things go wrong. there's this destructive force in the universe, a void, that will feed your ambition and beckon you to leave the people you love. beckon you to stab them in the back. that's why she doesn't trust anymore- out of fear. out of the fear that she will leave them and not be herself anymore. merci trusted, look what happened to her. merci died just like daddy did.
so yes, yves is reluctant to give out her name. especially after battle, when this woman could be setting a trap. this woman could be ready to stab her in the back. "the only humans left in pax are usually dead or agents." the stranger says. "are you dead or are you an agent?" yves asks, her gaze on the lake unwavering.
she eventually turns to physis and reports, "you may call me yves." yves doesn't offer a handshake- no. instead she looks at her and pats her shoulder. "what do you go by?"
yves listens and doesn't reply. physis knows what she is doing. as normal, yves is content with following. when someone offers advice, you take it. there's no pride in ignoring facts. there's no pride in yves at all. toska

physis gives her a strange look at her strange question. arceus, did she just stumble upon another die-hard philosopher? between batin and iskander, physis was starting to fill her quota.
"if you are trying to threaten me, then reconsider. partner scourge are perfectly capable of picking hades targets" physis turns away. she is starting to think that she knows exactly what kind of girl that she came across (the girl that sophia rosenburg once was). "...i am physis. one of the earliest agents."
"threaten you?" yves asks, her voice trailing off. she just stares at her shoes. yves has never threatened anyone in her life. she doesn't threaten people.
threat·en /THretn/: state one's intention to take hostile action against someone in retribution. state one's intention. yves does not threaten, she only takes action. so no. negative. she is not threatening anyone. "no." yves finally answers. "i was just asking you, are you dead or are you an agent?"
and physis answers. "good, an agent." yves says quietly to herself. "hello physis." she starts with a sigh, "i guess we'd better move then, before those two get out of there." she stares at the institute. toska

physis can't help but wonder how this girl's logic worked if she could watch her command a scourge froslass into battle and not assume that she were an agent. ah, if only eos trainers were so guillible.
"...i think they would be gathering my scraps, but yes. we should be on the move." physis still regrets not burning the remains of those papers. she cannot help but wonder if those documents would have been worth risking an arm.
physis follows the froslass, figuring that she would be able to follow the scent of blood in the air. scourge feeding grounds, most likely. at the same time, she keeps an eye out for the sableye. wouldn't do yves much good if they abandoned him here.
sure, yves assumed that physis was an agent. she's just not the type of person to jump to conclusions in conversation. and she's seen weirder things happen. everyone lies. yves does not often put her trust in people. physis was one of the first.
"what do you think they've found in there?" her voice softens, as she follows physis. the pax institute is filled to the brim with very important documents. getting their hands on one would give an advantage to eos. "anything of value?" ah, hope's here. yves can't see him, but he's here. she can feel it.
"hope, reveal yourself." she orders, and his body appears next to hers. his teeth are covered in blood. at least he could get himself something to eat. toska

"...from what i have gleamed, they were scraps of ancient history." physis does not slow down her footsteps to explain. eos will not be the ones to slow for them. "history about the dream world. why do you think that world-class scientists would be putting historical documents under lock and key?"
the question was meant to be rhetorical.
"just make sure that he keeps up" physis murmurs, hoping that he wasn't sighted by an enemy. "it might be better to keep him in the shadows when you can, as long as you are aware of where he is at all times."
she usually doesn't care what people do when talking to her. she doesn't usually care how people speak to her. perhaps it's because she has just met a woman who is obviously stronger than her, perhaps it is because she actually made the decision this once to stay. and try to work together.
she won't play this phony ally role anymore. "you wound me," she grunts. a rhetorical statement as well. "and if they are under lock and key," yves takes a breath. "how were they ever found?"
she doesn't expect an answer, so she turns away and walks in silence. common goals are not enough for people to work together. yves makes a personal note of that. toska

physis does not enjoy ruminating about the past, but she decides to indulge the girl. although they lost the fight, she did prove herself useful. for a few seconds, the crunching of their footsteps continue before physis punctuates the silence.
"i was once a researcher at pax institute. i still remember the passcodes to certain safes. i admit that the trainers would not have gotten the information if i had come a little later. that is why i was willing to defend it to the very last moment. i could risk nothing"
and now all of it was lost, physis thinks bitterly. it seems that she will always be taking two steps back for every three that she puts forward.
yves listens. physis knows the passcodes. she used to work there. then why are all of the important files still locked up in there? the rift is just up the path. she's surprised that the files haven't already been transferred to the castle. "if you know the pass codes, have you considered moving the files? somewhere where no eos participant can find them?" hope, sableye finally joins froslass's side up front.
"i was trying to defend it too, you know." yves points out. although not for the same reasons. "seems we double crossed each other." she says, shrugging. "my presence probably hurt your chances of keeping those files safe. i know that." she sighs. "i don't do well when around people like you." but that's a lie. just a pointless excuse, and yves knows it.
she straightens her mask and thinks, they've found something. something really useful, haven't they?toska
