This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

she had believed that there were no use in digging up departed ghosts, but she is not so sure if that's what the pax scientists' research was at all.
"if you had an idea of how much and the nature of the research that pax institute contained, then you would know exactly how near-impossible of a task that would be." physis had the dubious honor of working for the premier pokemon institute in the world, after all. moving the most valuable information would be like moving a university, and that was if she could discern what was truly useful. academia was tricky like that. only the academics who had been running the experiments would know about the relavance of their data sets. being able to read the information was the small concern.
"i did not see eos as a danger to pax. they do not have very many skilled researchers among their ranks these days." their loss. the data would hardly be descipherable to a normal trainer. "neither did i think that many would be foolhardy enough to charge upfront into the heart of pax. those two ... were anamolies. the pink-haired girl especially"
physis pauses along their path. "...excuses will not help you survive this conflict." she turns around to face yves. "your actions are your own, and blame will not save you from the consequences. your emotional refuge is a false one."
she turns away. "it is not shameful to work independently."
she remembers when things were different in lake pax. she remembers when she didn't have to give a damn about the pax institute. they didn't pollute (too much) and they never asked anything of her father. but now, here she is, on unnecessary pins and needles, wondering about how much they have learned. yves wonders.
let them find their documents, she thinks. a failure is not fatal. yves glances at physis. as long as you know how to deal with it.
near impossible does not mean not possible. "one person's 'near-impossible' is another's 'possible.'" yves mutters, her eyes locked on the path ahead. "why don't you give me the codes." that's highly unlikely. yves knows it. she's not a pax scientist. she is no specialist. if she was, she'd have the codes already. why didn't she have the codes already? is she that pathetic? is she really that small? possibly, she decides. she is nothing compared to this woman. just an uneducated girl who lost her father and turned on him the first chance she got. she is no genius, she is no prodigy, she is no agent.
but she is a human. as much as she wishes she was something else: a machine or a robot, she is a human. and yves knows what the fuck she's doing. or she likes to think she does. "blowing off the eos program, ignoring it, is one of the most ignorant things i've ever heard." she stares at physis coldly and lets her speak.
"it is shameful to fail independently when you could succeed together."toska

"you want me to give you the codes." physis is silent for a few moments. "because you believe that you are able to accomplish what i did not."
it was not a worthy task, but it would keep her busy, at least.
well. it wasn't as if she could be battling the bulk of eos alone. for that matter, neither could physis, but she was able to put herself into battles where she would not be without a wild scourge partner, at least. she isn't quite sure if this girl would be willing to do the same.
which is precisely why she agrees to yves' volunteered task. "only if you agree to memorize all of them. the codes vary by building, and i only had access to certain floors. do not attempt to break the locks, as some of them will set their contents aflame in the event of attempted theft"
physis does not even turn around to look at her when yves accuses her of taking eos lightly. "ten months. that's how long i have been fighting eos. i have lost a fiancee, a home, and a civilian identity for this task. so i suggest that you refrain from baseless accusations."
she is calm, if only because it is a fact that she has accepted long ago. physis no longer feels as if those things belong to her any longer.
she is taken aback when physis considers giving her the codes. originally she thought her chances were ridiculous, but after a second consideration- yves gets it. physis feels challenged. yves had implied that she could accomplish something physis could not.
it makes sense. yves would do the same. feel threatened. feel prideful. but it's okay, she decides. she's going to get those documents far, far away from pax. "i can memorize them." she says. and she can. and she will. "i can memorize them and i can move them." she stares at physis. in truth, she can do all this, but it's one of the only things she can do.
she doesn't fight, hope does. she doesn't protect herself, hope does. moving a few documents is something she can do to try and hold on to her dear life. physis is correct, yves wouldn't dare charge into battle alone if her life depended on it.
yves has lost things too, and she wants to share them, but she just- she just can't. "i apologize." it's sincere. "but you had just said that they were not a threat." she retaliates, now, trying to catch physis's eye. "yet they took so much from you."unless they didn't, yves thinks. unless physis has an incredible destructive streak.
"so tell me, physis. which is it. are they a threat to you, or are you a threat to yourself?"toska

she allows the froslass to keep a lookout for eavesdroppers. physis recites the codes for yves. twice each, and no more.
scourge pokemon begin wandering into their path. the hunting groups vary in species and number, but that's alright. they provide some insulation from potential eos trainers, and that is all that matters. sophia cared about them at one point. physis doesn't.
"...i just said that eos is no threat to pax." at times like these, physis feels the need to draw on sophia's near-infinite paitience. the other girl is fishing for specific answers to questions that have not been raised. physis is no orator. "eos only took one of the three. the other two, i abandoned. they were of no value to me."
she's not sure if she understands yves' questions anymore.
it's okay that physis doesn't understand. not many people do understand yves. she's alone in this world- that's a revelation that revealed itself long ago. it doesn't matter. she doesn't care. alone, together, there's no difference. she listens to the codes and stays quiet. the numbers click into her brain without too much trouble; she repeats each combination mentally after physis says them aloud.
it's not at all hard for yves to remember things- her brain isn't full yet. there's lots of room for numbers and codes. "i've got them." she says quietly when physis finishes. "thank you." she sticks her hands in her pockets.
"one way or another, everything is of value." yves points out, staring at her sneakers. "unless you got rid of them because you didn't want them."toska

"don't be caught. pax is less safe than it used to be."
maybe it should have gone unsaid. unsaid words have caused physis far too much trouble for her to risk it, though.
she pauses.
"value is relative" she removes her helmet when they are a good distance in. the concentration of pokemon and the night cover are protection enough. that, and she did want a breath of some fresh air. "even the most important things can be devalued by another, as surely as time passes by."
yves nods. pax institute can get dangerous- she learned that today. and in the future it'll only be more dangerous as eos discovers it. but she can handle that issue, although not head on. she's not even noticeable enough for people to pay much attention anyway. she'll get in and out before anyone even knows she's there.
"sure, they lose value for a while," yves says. "but like an old coin, eventually they're gonna be worth more than you ever thought they'd be." she scuffs a shoe against the dirt.
physis has a short crop of black hair and haunting eyes. yves stares for a moment. she didn't think that physis would look like that.
she doesn't take off her mask. it hides her from eos, sure, but it also hides what she feels from physis. toska
