This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

For a girl, Florance had unpretentious down to a science, or perhaps it was just her being lazy, but she'd like to think it was the former. She arrived at the Guild in just a pair of jeans and an oversized t-shirt. "Yo?" She called out, hoping for a response from Lady Mercedes or anyone. It was eerily quiet and it was giving Florance the chills.
"Anyone hear? I've been recruited to the Eos breeding program?" Rather, she flagged down a recruiter in Eos and practically forced him to give her approved paperwork, but whatever. It was legal anyway, as far as she knew.
Lady Mercedes emerged from the other end of the foyer. She rarely received visitors herself, but she'd sent the help away to assist with the disaster at the hospital.
"Were you now?" Mercedes asked, her voice ringing across the hall. She didn't doubt the claim though, and even if she did, she didn't hugely care. Their numbers were few enough after the Siege of Nerio that Mercedes wasn't picky. "We get so few recruits these days."
She beckoned to the girl, not seeing to see if she followed her to her office.
Mercedes walked over to a PC--one of those high tech state-of-art devices--that summoned a hologram display of a pokemon box labeled EOS.
"Yeah, the name's Florance." She supposed her name didn't exactly matter. Florance shoved her hands into her pockets. She knew the basics of breeding, there were types and you let those types well, have a good time to put it gently. Beyond that, breeding was a mystery. She had well, been a chef and a bit of a trainer up until this point.
She followed Mercedes into her office, kinda, well, happier that she didn't have to meet the Pokemon face to face to decide which ones she wanted to bring home. She couldn't do that stare into their eyes and decide thing, she'd attempt to bring them all home. "Before I decide Lady, can you offer me some advice? I've never really done this before." All the breeders she had met along her travels were great grandsons and granddaughters of breeders and breeding Pokemon were in their blood. Florance had known of that. She looked down, lowering her guard for a moment as if embarrassed by the pure fact that she had to ask.
Plenty of people had asked her for advice in the past, but usually she could tell if they were completely green or actually competent.
Merecedes stared at Florance for a second too long, taking her assessment of the would-be breeder. She looked like she knew about delibirds and combees. Sometimes, they didn't. Those sorts were difficult to advise.
"Focus on only one or two egg groups to start with. You want your pokemon to be compatible with each other. Field is the beginner's choice, which I recommend. However, field pokemon are common, and while they are never unwanted, you will find more success and acclaim with the trainers' favorites: Monster or Dragon. Note that they are harder to breed, thus their rarity. Their difficulty will lead to a slow start, unless you are phenomenally lucky."
She sighed, not at Florance but in general, and it was an elegant gesture--a queen tired of dealing with peons. "I despise the dramatic headlines given to the scourge in the reporter, but they are correct in the basics: people are dying. Time is of essence. A slow start would not help your cause."
Mercedes's gaze softened, marginally. "Don't doubt yourself, child. The eos program does not accept fools."
Florance nodded. Field types were easy, monsters and dragons were popular but hard to breed. People were dying and in need of good Pokemon. The front liners needed good Pokemon, good vaccinated Pokemon. "How old do Pokemon need to be before you breed them? How often can you breed one Pokemon?" How long till after they hatch, she meant. She didn't want to traumatize any Pokemon.
"Thank you, Lady Mercedes." It was soft, a bit quiet, but she definitely meant it. She took a look at the holograms. They luckily listed type as well, Florance would have been too embarrassed to ask herself about that.
Florance had to remind herself that she was no longer looking at these Pokemon as a trainer, she didn't need to care which one would make her look tougher. She had trouble though when it came to falling back to old roots. She stirred clear of the dragon, and pokemon that she knew she wouldn't want. She narrowed it down to two pairs. This is where she got stuck.
"I'm stuck between the Torterra and Trevenant, and the Mamoswine and Raichu. Can you tell me a bit about grass, fairy, and amorphous breeding?" After this, she had to pick her other Pokemon after all. It'd be easiest to know what she was looking for, and what she was up against . hook ¿
Those were questions no one could answer. "How soon after hatching is your decision. Pokemon in a baby stage cannot breed, but otherwise, it's up to you. Some breeders would breed parent and child for the perfect egg. I would not, but I could understand why. Understand: pokemon do not age as we do. Besides for those species with a baby stage, they are born full-grown and as wise as any human adult."
Mercedes would've judged really, really hard if Florence couldn't at least guess at a pokemon's type and egg group at a glance.
"Amorphous is underrated. I dabbled in it a fair bit when I started out. It's mostly ghost and poison pokemon, but it features ralts, a pokemon so in demand that a breeder could become a one-trick-pony--or a one-trick-stud, in this case.
"Grass has a healthy overlap with many other egg groups. The pokemon tend to be friendly, easy to breed, and you can expand into other groups as you gain experience as a breeder. If you intend on battling yourself, be careful with it. A grass egg specialist is about as well-rounded in combat as a grass-only trainer.
"The fairy group produces mostly support pokemon, healers like chansey or the audino here. It's a small group though, which makes it simpler to master but less rewarding to do so. It also holds a great number of species with baby stage pokemon--pichu, cleffa, igglybuff, the list goes on--which may slow you down at the start. "
Florance nodded again. She could basically breed whenever, but she wasn't exactly fond of breeding parents with children, it just sounded wrong. She was supposed to be fighting injustice, not supporting it.
Ghost types were popular though, had great special attacks. Grass types were great, but they had many weaknesses that could easily be exported. It was a tough life for a grass solo trainer, seeing as fiery types were also popular. For the first time in a long time, she was over thinking it. She wanted her stock to be, well, strong and competent.
"I think I'm going to go with the Torterra and Trevenant, and I'll branch into both grass and amorphous egg groups." It'd be tough, but worth it nonetheless. Especially if she could get her hands onto a Ralts, from there, she could figure out where she wanted to go with her breeding.
"There are breeding societies, right Lady Mercedes?" hook ¿
"You'll start first with the great orders of Nerio City. They'll welcome new breeders into their ranks, although they do ask that you have some amount of experience. They don't accept dabblers."
The PC gurgled cheerfully as it deposited two pokeballs into Lady Mercedes' hands. She turned to present them to Florance. "The breeding societies you mention are in Hespera City. Should you survive that long, and should you become competent at your work, they too will take you in."
Mercedes didn't mention anything about the secret societies. They were, after all, secret.

GMOT ? HONEY NEXT TIME I FORGET ABOUT A MOD THREAD YOU COME YELL AT ME ABOUT IT ALRIGHT? OMG
She nodded. This was a big step for her. Certain words ringed in her mind, they don't accept dabblers. She accepted the pokeballs and smiled. "Thank you, Lady Mercedes."If you live that long. She became a breeder so she could live, there was no way that she was dying at the hands of pokemon racked with blood-lust.
