This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Thalia was working her way through the NPC trainers around the site, partially for shits and giggles but also partially because I like battling. In all of its same-y excruciatingly long glory.
She looked at the map on her C-Gear. Or tried to, anyway. Through about the 8 layers of clothing she was swaddled in, making things out was difficult. She squinted. The blurry lines on the screen seemed to resolve themselves into something that definitely said her end point was here. In this spot. Maybe.
The screen cracked from the wind.
"Why can't reclusive powerful trainers ever live in cities," Thalia mumbled into her scarf. It came out sounding more like "Blurghmufzblurghblrugh."
people rarely sought out stavros the dragon tamer. he was known for being a strong trainer, but at the same time, he was also a man of too many years past, far too old to be gallivanting around lake pax like donovan was. he preferred hiding away in the depths of the mors desert and its sand dunes and sandstorms, inspecting ruins to no apparent result and tormenting claydol with his shrill whistles that woke even mummified pokémon.
of course, he was as strong as he was fifty years ago. it probably was why he had managed to live for so long within the eye of a sandstorm, where the winds and sands raged more violently than ever. his pokémon were used to the weather as well, and visibility was never an issue for them. for his challengers though, that was a different story. many of them had ran away after realizing they weren't even going to see his face halfway through the battle, and the sandstorm was making them cry.
stavros adjusted his go-goggles. kids these days came unprepared. or maybe they no longer made these goggle things. he did buy them slightly over forty years ago. (the goggles were scratchproof, unlike those flimsy c-gear screens that children toted around nowadays.)
having perfected the art of yawning without getting a mouthful of sand in the process, stavros demonstrated such an action before his tyrantum. the t-rex pokémon mimicked its trainer by flexing its jaws, and together, they trekked through the desert away from where thalia was.
an ampharos hopped up behind the female trainer and tapped her on the shoulder. 'amph!' it chirped happily, tail gem glowing in the sandstorm. it seemed to serve as some beacon of sorts for stavros to identify his challenger. whatever the case was, challenging dragon tamer stavros didn't seem as simple as with the other npcs.
Thalia briefly considered jumping as the ampharos tapped her on the shoulder, but decided it wasn't worth the effort. She might get even more sand in her boots.
She shuffled around to face the pokemon, and pulled her scarf down from over her mouth.
"Sup," she said. "I'm Thalia. Do you need something?"
Her now useless C-Gear was still dangling loosely from her hand.
the ampharos really couldn't make out what thalia was saying. it sounded like a lot of sand and wind to its ears. it cocked its head and frowned. 'amph?' it tried again. stavros spoke more clearly, and the ampharos really hadn't seen many humans in its life. it waved its stubby hands in the air, attempting to mimic a pokéball being enlarged and a pokémon sent out to battle.
Thalia was really not good at charades. She watched the ampharos wave its paw about. It...needed directions? Well, it wasn't like she could help it out at all, not with this broken C-Gear, but she did have something else.
Thalia sent out pupitar.
"I think this ampharos is lost," she said. "Can you help him out?"
'i'm not lost,' said the ampharos to the pupitar, 'i just wanted to know if your trainer wished to challenge my trainer. usually people who stand here right where the X is have such intentions.'
the ampharos's tail worked like a beacon to things in the distance, and stavros's tyrantrum picked up the signal. the t-rex stomped about happily in the sands, glancing to its trainer for the sign. "oh, not again," said stavros, "i'll gladly accept, though." he chuckled. "go ahead."
the tyrantrum stomped through the sand, raining draco meteor down where the massive X was. that was the entire reason why stavros had that area marked: it was simply easier to aim.
She threw herself to the side and rolled across the ground. Pupitar wasn't so lucky. She'd been drifting contently in the heat and the wind. The meteors squashed her into the ground like a bug.
Thalia "..."'d and called the pokemon back. She sent out dragonite and charizard.
stavros watched the pupitar sink into the sands. he chuckled. trainers these days were rather adorable.
"go for a second attack," he urged the tyrantrum. it complied.

the ground shuddered and shook, before another comet sped down towards the desert without prior warning. it was significantly larger and less scattered than the draco meteor had been. the tyrantrum sighed contentedly.
whoa. whoa whoa whoa. too fast. a beam of ice and dragon came rushing in the tyrantrum's direction. the first attack hit the tyrantrum in the face, but it managed to get out of the way of the dragon rush. it retaliated by darting away to bide its time for another day.

the ampharos glanced at thalia. it had stopped signalling by now.
The wind was beneath their wings, and charizard and dragonite felt unstoppable. The two smoothly flew in unison to avoid the falling rocks and then executed their attacks, still in tandem.
Whether they would actually hit or not through the raging storm was another question.

"Pupitar liked you," she said accusingly to the ampharos. "And you let her get squashed by a meteor."
charizard and dragonite were working in tandem and working well. they found a suitable air current to lift them and cast themselves into the tyrantrum's way. the tyrantrum soon found itself overwhelmed by a medley of attacks, but never mind. it wasn't an ex-champion's pokémon for nothing.

the rush attack was predictable, and so the t-rex avoided that. the claws and surf were something of a relief to the creature, and it immediately snapped once the two of them were close enough for it to land a hit.

the ampharos was only acting as a referee. that was its only task, to be rather honest, and all the trainers said the same about it. it supposed it had to tell stavros to stop the draco meteors on unsuspecting challengers, because that wasn't playing nice at all.
Oops. The storm had suddenly turned against them, and suddenly charizard and dragonite were floundering. They struggled to re-align against both the sandstorm and the tyrantrum.
