This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Shyvana swiveled her neck, peering curiously at the baby pokemon's psybeam as it squeaked by her nose. She sniffed at the air, disdainfully. She hit the last standing Mime Jr. with a shadow claw, followed by a dragon claw, and a heat wave to the face.
Diana seriously considered not doing anything while watching the charizard rip the Mime Jr. a new one. Eventually, she decided on a faint attack.
Griff suspected that the Mime Jr. was exceptionally dead.
The timer read 57:02:54.
"Maybe it's a bomb. You think if we filled the first room with, like, safari bait, we could lure them all inside, lock them in, and let the timer run out."
the baby psychic pokemon go down rather easily. iker starts to wonder if bombing was griff's go-to solution for everything. he isn't giving the other ranger any reason to think otherwise.
"seems like we're given a challenge for unlocking each door. not sure if waiting it out is what the engineers were looking for." then again, they're not really sure of anything in the lua gardens, are they? "where would we get all that safari bait?"
there's not much time before the next wave arrives. a horde of volbeat arrive, and they don't look happy. thank god i didn't roll like tyranitars.
"...well." iker finally draws his heart sign - muddy water and hits every pokemon in the horde. a few of them lose accuracy from mud water in their eyes. manectric atttempts to sink his fangs into a few of them while doduo attempts to peck the others.
"It's a useless hypothetical," Griff said, although he did have a fair number of berries to spare. He doubted that worked like bait though. "But if you know of a place around here with lots of safari bait, let me know."
...There are nine volbeats.
...Nine.
Nine fucking volbeats.
The charizard has at it. Shyvana unleashed a heat wave that made Griff take a good few steps back, and then followed it up with a rock slide from on high.
Diana also took a few steps back to avoid the heat, which she was sensitive to. She used faint attack on the first, iron head on the second, and sweet scent on all of them.
Griff drew the darkrai sign (dark void).

Every volbeat except the second falls asleep. It looks very lonely and awake. It may be living in a nightmare. It, in fact, falls unconscious, because it's actually been hit really hard. So does the first volbeat--and the ones that manectric and doduo attacked too.
Four down down, five to go.
The five roll to wake up.
< 50 wakes up (they are now renumbered 1-5 for my sanity)
One, four, and five wake up. The other two sleep on.
Dude, they should all be unconscious now, I'm just letting a few live for the sake of good sport. They don't need to sound the retreat.
at griff's onslaught, the manectric and doduo have the good sense to take several steps back as well.
the volbeat that are still awake use moonlight. it does them about This Much Good.
manectric thunder waves a conscious volbeat before sinking his fire fang into another. doduo is smart enough to start an uproar. welp. iker starts to think that he should have looked for a different assist.
or he could just make sure that everything was actually quite unconscious. iker draws heart sign - muddy water. tcJ5h8km <80 hits
the second wave ends as a massacre. one volbeat manages to survive by sheer dumb luck and the virtue of not being hit by both uproar and muddy water. he attempts to flee, except there's not really anyplace to flee to. he settles for huddling in a corner, shivering pathetically.
the nonexistent third wave gives them some time to recuperate. the timer read 48:21:41.
"man, some rangers we are."
all they really needed was a team rocket suit.
iker walks over to the volbeat.
"so what's the timer about?"
1-30 <don't know> 31-60 <the door opens at 00:00:00> 61-90 too traumatized to answer 91-100 <YOU'RE ALL GONNA DIE>
"Well. It's not like we took an oath to save all of wild pokemon we run into. I'm not going to let them murder us just because they're cute and fuzzy and not as evil as the scourge."
The unown was talking shit. That was his conclusion. "I wouldn't mind him. I think we broke him, and if not, he's got no reason to tell us the truth after watching us scorch a few dozen pokemon."
A few dozen? Yeah. They were practically villains going at this rate.
Griff didn't seem to care much about the volbeat corpses, although he took the time to draw throw a few into the pit of unown ashes. That was all he could manage before more wild pokemon threw themselves at them.
Wave 3: three dancing bellossoms. They each immediately open with teeter dance and a triad of leaf storm, one each aimed at the charizard, mawile, and doduo.
The charizard immediately responded with a heat wave, ignoring the assault of leaves. The mawile played rough with the first bellossom. Both avoided the strange teeter dance.
Griff drew his heart sign (night daze) on the first bellossom.
toska --assume everyone is hit by one teether dance since I'm too lazy to figure out targeting
"i guess we don't have much incentive to slow down." his eyes flicker to the timer.
still, maybe they could attempt a different approach.
iker draws psychic sign - heal pulse (upgraded) at the half dead volbeat. goddamn, there were bellossom coming at them, so this better work.
b4oOFCjI <50 volbeat feels more cooperative
oh thank arceus.
<50 volbeat even knows wtf is going on
<survive the waves until the timer runs out> he croaks.
well. that's...certainly helpful, although iker doubted that griff would be so readily to accept the volbeat's testimony as-is. not that they have much of a choice at the moment.
meanwhile, iker's pokemon dodge the fuck out of teeter dance. doduo didn't like the leaf storm, however. doduo attempts to peck the things to death while manectric uses fire fang. hook ¿
