This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

The boathouse is the closest thing EOS has to a stronghold in the midst of Pax. Being where it is, that means stronghold is an extremely generous term. Coming here on the request of a Hades agent, walking into what is no doubt a trap, is one of the stupidest things Thalia has ever done.
She still does it. The wildlife is eerily still around here. Even the scourge seem to be lying low--she hasn't seen any so far, at least. It's one of those false spring days, the wind whipping cold at her heels even though the sun is out, wan and distant in the sky.
Thalia doesn't call out for the other woman, the agent. She invited her here. She suspects she can find her if she wants.
she comes her without hope today, without her mask. she keeps her styler in case she needs it desperately-- but this isn't to be that sort of meeting. hope is in the woodsy area nearby if thalia thinks up anything tricky. but yves highly doubts it. no need to fight when you can just get information instead. and yves doesn't mind sharing. not at all.
it will only help her in the long run, anyway. all the agents would appreciate it if she got things moving. she greets thalia quietly, not wishing to startle her.
"you showed up."

yves nods, crossing her legs. thalia is someone different. stronger than the rest of eos. she'd love to have the girl 'neo' here as well-- but then she'd be biting off a bit more than she could chew. especially when neo was able to clone pokemon. she was clearly an outstander amongst the rest of the program. yves blinked.
"where did i leave off?" she asked, clasping her hands together.

she stares off solemnly. "i know." it's a shameful response.
"but you have to understand." yves's head drops. "she has her reasons." it's a quiet mumur, barely audible. "she has her reasons and...she weighed the options."
"this was what she chose."

she looks at thalia and resists saying another word-- just sits with her mouth open, vulnerable. she rubs her eyes. "it was either that or death." she eventually manages, looking away.
don't give her a reason to comfort you- she frowns, head turned from thalia. you don't need consoling. you don't need anything from her.
but she doesn't want to do this anymore; she doesn't want to pretend to feel nothing. she doesn't want to convince herself that she feels nothing anymore because she feels a lot. especially here, of all places--her home. born and raised and pax, and now she has to see it like this.
even worse, she has to see her life go up in a fiery wreck, destroyed by the very decision she thought would save her. she scratches at her arm. come out, come out, come out she thinks. the virus, the disease, the monster buzzes inside of her, and she wants nothing more to get it out. whatever the cost. she wants the yves out, just for now, please, just this once--
merci breaths out, exhausted. "i would have died, i." she sighs.
"i would have died."

The words she said to Alex rise to Thalia's tongue (you should have died. the rest of us don't deserve to suffer for your cowardice. you should have died.) but she swallows them. It hadn't helped when she said them then, and she hadn't wanted to help. She had wanted her words to dig like knives under skin.
A part of her wants that even now, but a larger part doesn't.
"I understand," Thalia says. It wouldn't have been a choice for her. Her life had never mattered to her, except for what she could forge out of it for others. But she knows (thank god) not everyone is like her. "I was scourge once."
she should have died, it's true. she chose wrong. she made the wrong move. she lost her king instead of her queen. because it seemed stronger. because anything else would have been cowardly. doing anything else would have meant running away from destiny. and you can only do it for so long.
merci looks at thalia with brown eyes, much emptier than moments before. life is simple now, simple for just this moment in time. but when she sees the look on thalia's face-- the pain, the frustration, the hesitation, her mediocre feelings fade. thalia doesn't have to use words to cut merci's skin. because her eyes do it all.
but wait. the knives disappear. back to the drawer. merci swallows, her throat dry. thalia was like her. thalia had been here too.
"how did you escape?" she coughed out, trembling.

"A friend cured me," she says. "There's a cure." She can't help leaning forward a little, anymore than she can help the razor edge of hope that bleeds into her voice as she speaks.
"You have a choice. It isn't like before. You don't have to stay like this. And you can live."
merci stifles back a gasp-- her hope has been justified. there is a cure. there is an answer. she looks at thalia with belief in her eyes. for the first time in a year, she knows (knows) that there is a way out.
but is it really a way out? can she ever be free? because even if she's cured she'll still die. the virus will hunt her down and kill her once more. it will find her. and she'll be back here. except then: the story will have a different ending.
she shakes her head anxiously at thalia. her face says where can i find this cure, i need it but her body says the opposite. "it'll find me. it'll find me and kill me, for real--" she breaks off.

"The virus isn't going to kill you," Thalia says fiercely, "I won't let it. When you're cured, I'll protect you. We can even cure your sableye as well, if you want to bring him. Nothing will hurt you. You'll be safe. I can send you to Juno, Sol, maybe further, if you want. To another region even. The scourge are going to lose, the virus is going to lose, and--"
The world will be the better place she always knew it could be. The slant of light across the floor meaning something like truth, blessings falling where they were earned.
