This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

she's silent for a moment. just watches thalia. admires her. this stranger-- a woman she just met-- meant every word of what she said. merci could tell. it was convincing. tempting. but still, it. she just couldn't.
when she thought about it, there was no reason why she couldn't do this. merci sighed. "but how will i live with this." she asks quietly and plainly, under her breath. "what if people find out?"
"what if they find out what i've done. who i am."

"You live with it the only way anyone lives with it. You make it better. I won't tell you to fight on the front lines for EOS if you don't want to fight, but even a quiet life tucked away in the corner of a city doesn't mean you can't help. You can volunteer at fundraisers. Become a nurse. Work in a lab. Even if all you do is maybe write a letter to a ranger who lost their family, or box up a care package for a researcher--as long as you do what you can, meaning well--that's all anyone can ask of you.
There's no one who has lived a perfect life. There's no one who hasn't hurt other people. But that's not what's important. What's important is what you choose to do about it, when you get the chance. That is what defines you. And if other people find out and can't accept that, that's on them. That's something wrong with them, not you. No one is ever so far gone they can't go back, Merci."
She narrowed her eyes.
"When I said I'd protect you, if you take this chance, I meant it. And not just from the virus."
merci hugs herself tightly, mind lost in thought. a nurse? she wouldn't mind being a nurse. working in a lab. she didn't really have the education for that. but she could volunteer. there were things to do. but would they redeem what she had done?
eos? she felt weird that eos was even a possibility. there was no chance they'd let her into eos-- unless she lied. no matter. this was all hypothetical. yes. all hypothetical.
"h-how?" she stammered. "how does this work?"

"First, we'd get out of here. Go somewhere safe. I have a friend in Nerio we could stay with. I'll contact the researcher I know with the cure. We cure you. And then you figure out what you want to do from there, and I'll help you do it."
was there anywhere 'safe' for her? would she ever feel 'safe'? she used to, living by the lake with her father, she didn't have a worry or care. and now she has to worry about everything, including death. it could come at any moment now. she bit a nail off viciously.
she breaths heavily, mind filled to the brim with possibility. she looks at thalia. calms down for a moment. "how can i trust you." she goes quiet.
"how do i know you aren't taking me to my death."

Thalia looked at her for a moment, then walked a few feet away. There was a boulder inset into the ground. Maybe a hundred pounds--more than that? Thalia didn't know. She just knew it was a huge chunk of rock in the middle of the forest.
She grit her teeth and slammed her fist into the center of the rock. For a moment there was nothing, and the boulder split neatly into two halves, falling to the ground in pieces. Thalia turned back to face Merci.
"If I wanted to kill you," she said quietly, "I wouldn't have to take you anywhere. But I don't want to kill you. That's not the world I want to save. That's not the kind of world I believe in. There's nothing that can't be forgiven,"i can be forgiven, she thinks, and then locks the thought away. This isn't about her. "And I don't want to kill people. I want people to make amends. I want people to be better than they were before, to be kind and good and strong like they were always capable of being. You can't kill your way into a world like that. You just have to trust me. I know what I'm asking. Bring your capture styler. If it looks like a trap, you can teleport out. And there's nothing I can do about that."
"i don't want to kill you. i don't want to kill people. i want people to make amends. i want people to be better than they were before, to be kind and good and strong like they were always capable of being.

merci watches in silence. she reaches out an arm as thalia turned. her face dropped. don't go, she thinks.. i need you. she shakes her head. i need your help. and she shivers, defeated, ready for what's to come.
crack. she stands at once, face wincing, eyes closed. terrified, she freezes in place-- but there was no pain. nothing. and her body didn't collapse, her fingers didn't stop wiggling. frantically her eyes open to see the boulder cracked open, and thalia turned away. it wasn't a gun, and it wasn't her skull. it was a boulder. she looks quickly at thalia's hand with concern-filled eyes.
she stares at thalia nervously; listens to her. somewhere the yves inside screams out "get out of here, she's getting riled up. she will kill you." but the merci thinks. watches. and eventually her eyes come to a close. she nods her head slowly and then walks forward, gently placing her hand on thalia's arm, hesitantly. "...o. okay. i trust you. i believe you."i believe in you.

she smiled back, although it almost felt painful to do so. "i have," merci says, nodding, "in a dream, once." she closed her eyes and reminisced. "it was amazing." the wind was would be her favorite part of it-- feeling the breeze whip against your face was would be a marvelous feeling. and when you flew through a cloud or flew under the moon...it would be was beautiful. her eyes opened and she focused on thalia.
"i think."

She fumbled for a pokeball, finally settling on Dragonite. Charizard and Salamence were both excitable, fond of battle. Dragonite was more level-headed.
The dragon type appeared in a flash of red light, and true to Thalia's hopes, did nothing more than gaze down steadily at Merci.
"Unlike you," she said, smiling sheepishly. "I can't just teleport out of places. I either walk or I fly. If you like, we could fly."
it was a dragonite-- she'd seen one of those before. they were kind, bashful pokemon apparently. at least that's what the fairy tales said. the princes would always slay the salamence. dragonite was too nice. merci looked back up at him and outstretched a hand, desiring to pat him but...she resisted; pulled away. the virus was inside of her. she would not allow herself to taint this creature, even if it was 'vaccinated' as eos called it. in truth, nothing can evade the virus.
"we can fly," she repeated, nodding. "or we can teleport."
"because i bet even you haven't done that."
