This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"Ambrose, watch out! A Scourge Kakuna! Hit it with everything you've got, now!"
The Krabby looked at Dan's backpack, which the ranger had hung from a nearby branch with some vines. An angry looking Kakuna was doodled on it, a very poor simulation of an actual Pokemon attack. After a moment's pause he turned to his human partner, the unamused look in his eyes saying more than words ever could.
When Ambrose suggested doing some fight training on the outskirts of the city, this wasn't really what he had in mind.
"I know, I know, it's no fun compared to the real thing," Dan sheepishly apologized. "But if we want to start protecting our region, we're going to need to stay sharp. Toss it away with a Vice Grip!"
The crab shuffled forward, raising a claw and clamping down hard on the backpack. He shook it back and forth a few times before letting go of his grip, sending it flying back. "Good, good!" Dan called. "But it's coming in for a Poison Sting! Hurry, duck!"
Sure enough, the vine-hung backpack swung back like a pendulum after Ambrose's strike. The crab quickly hit the deck, squatting low so the backpack harmlessly passed over his head. He tauntingly waved at the "Kakuna" as it passed, only for it to smack right into him on the backswing. He tumbled a little from the impact, hopping to his feet and dusting himself off.
"Almost, Ambrose!" Dan cheered "Just need to pay attention more. Next time that backpack swings in, you gotta hit it right out of the air! Why don't you give it another shot?"
The Krabby nodded and scuttled back over to the backpack, sending it swinging and giving it another whack whenever it approached. Dan kept vigilant watch, occasionally giving Ambrose a warning if he was about to get too lax with his timing. Compared to some of Kohaku's training facilities it was crude and kinda silly looking, but Dan always did prefer the fresh air.
He just hoped nobody walked in on their silly little war games.

addi had been walking through the city when she saw a krabby with a trainer who sported a capture styler. her interested was piqued as she strolled over, rondo leading the way. the growlithe barked happily, trotting forward to the krabby.
Soon, Ambrose had settled into a steady rhythm. Thwack. Thwack. Thwack. Thwack. Lick.
Lick?
Ambrose hopped back a little in surprise, the Growlithe's arrival snapping him out of his concentration. Once more the backpack came swinging, the Krabby barely regaining his composure and bracing for impact. He slid back a bit, shooting the Growlithe of surprise and slight annoyance.
"Alright, that should be good for today, Ambrose!" Dan decided. He walked up to the backpack, untangling it from the vines and putting it back on is back.
"No need to worry," he assured the new arrival. "We were just doing a bit of training. I'm Dan, by the way. Who are you?"

rondo simply panted and licked the krabby again, rubbing up against the pokemon happily. he barked.
addi sighed. "sorry about interrupting. he's just very friendly." she turned to dan and offered a smile. "my name's addi, pokemon ranger. and this is rondo, my partner."
Ambrose honestly had no idea how to react. A bit of a lone wolf by choice, affection from anyone or anything but his ranger partner was enough to take him out of his element. He flailed a little in confusion as the Growlithe nuzzled him, wondering where the heck the dog even came from.
"He seems like a really nice one!" Dan remarked. "I hope he doesn't take Ambrose too personally. He can be a bit of a loner sometimes.

"yeah, he likes others." she smiled fondly at the growlithe, chuckling a little. "he'll just keep trying to make friends." rondo stood on his hind paws, placing his front ones on the krabby's head and barked, tongue lolling out and panting happily.
"a few months, but i took a bit of a hiatus for a while. i'm just getting back into the game now."
Ambrose awkwardly waved at the Growlithe, starting to get used to the bigger dog's friendliness a bit. He was still a bit uneasy, but that's what happens when a sudden streak of gold knocks you right out of your comfort zone.
"A bit rusty, huh? I'm pretty new at this too." he commented, smiling a little. "Maybe we could help each other out a bit . . .

Oh, thank goodness. All that friendly stuff was over. If there was any language Ambrose understood, it was combat.
"On guard, Ambrose! Turn it aside and go for a point-blank Bubble!"
The crab hunched down in a fighting stance, using his left claw to move the Growlithe's head out of the way. From his right claw he fired a few Bubbles at the Growlithe's side.

Direct hit! Ambrose glowered, Leering at the Growlithe to try and get it off of its guard. While it was still in hitting range the Krabby lunged forward, hoping to grip onto it with a powerful Vice Grip.

This time Ambrose was ready. He scuttled away from the Growlithe, barely dodging away from its snapping jaws. He then lunged forward, aiming for another Vice Grip before too much of a distance was put between them.

No chance of escape here. He cringed as the dog's jaws came right down on him, impact shock shuddering down his spine. He refused to let himself look week, however: his eyes flashed open as he regained his composure, Leering at the Growlithe to try and intimidate him away.
