This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Borealis frowned glumly as everyone gave him strange looks. He flopped over to his Pokeball, sadly tapping its button and recalling himself. Guess nobody wanted to be friends, did they . . .
"I dunno yet. Probably going to go around and see what opportunities there are before committing myself. Are you in any branches?
No need to be sorry! You've been a huge help, and that means a ton. Thank you so much." She smiled warmly at Raph, four new pages in her sketchbook and a ton of new Pokedex entries under her belt.
"yeah, pax. though that's only proserpina's, and there are two other branches besides. last i heard, there are departments at nerio and at sol, so there's something to work towards. you're welcome." he adds the last with a smile and slots his pokemon back into the pc, keeping frederick out. damnit, he was getting soft, and all for the thing's puppy eyes.
"I'll make sure to look into them. What's the Pax branch like?"
Sol . . . that was incredibly far and surrounded by a practical nest of zombies. Sammy may have wanted a bit more adventure in her life, but that was just pushing it. Nerio was closer, though so if Pax wasn't her cup of tea she'd probably check out the research department there.
"pax is good; you need at least five dex entries to sign up, but they give you an extra eos vaccine every week. amber gives you five dex entries a week, though, and moneta gives you five rare candies for every one entry. really, it depends on which field you wanna go into."
"Vaccines could be really helpful. It's really dangerous around here, after all . . ."
Then it was settled. To Pax she goes! After all, with the amount of Pokemon she intended on getting it would just be foolish to leave them alone and unprotected.
The look in her eyes changed to one of concern as she quickly looked over Raph. "You've been keeping safe, right?"
"so do i. so do i." raph tucks his hands into his pockets and sighs. "but i never asked - where did you go after leaving bacchus? i couldn't find anyone after i left."
"I just . . . ran wherever I could. There was no way I was just retreating underground, or travelling all the way to Sol with my mother. All I knew was that I had to get away from it all, as soon as I could. Ended up making the journey alone, but I'm here and safe now, so it doesn't matter.
"...nerio. then di manes." he doesn't offer anymore information than that, and instead tries to direct the conversation elsewhere. "you made the journey alone? what happened to your mother?"
Sammy sighed a little, wondering how she was going to put this.
"I guess . . . I've been moving on their behalf since I was a kid. The constant moving just sorta gets to you after a while, y'know? So when they went their separate ways, I decided so would I. Maybe I'd finally take the chance to go where I choose, instead of just following them around all the time."
"ah." raph gives her an awkward pat. he's not one that she should be talking about this to; all he's known is a distant father but a caring mother, before the scourge had ripped them both apart. "at least you got to see the world a bit on your own terms, right?" it's a flimsy attempt to lighten the mood, and he winces at it.
then, on a whim, he asks. "do you wanna travel with me, then? i mean, you don't have to, but..." he leaves the offer open.
She was silent for a bit, letting the idea sink in. The worst was over: she wouldn't be alone anymore. And she couldn't think of a better person to travel with. The news finally fully absorbed, she looked up at Raph and smiled.
"That'd be wonderful. Thank you so much for the offer."
"then it's settled." raph gives her a smile back, and stretches.
"so where are you staying? do you need to pick stuff up?" he was staying in the pokemon center himself, but there were plenty of people that rented apartments for a week instead.
