This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

A lazy carcass stared at the sky. The silver haired closed his eyes, basking in the sun. He could hear the busy little bees running around. The green filled with excitement, pulling out their vaccinated pokemon and engaging one another in quick practice battles.
He rolled over with a yawn. His once white lab coat was now stained with green. The zangoose partnered to him, gave a small glance before turning away with a huff. Rome smirked. The pokemon still hasn't gotten used to him, but it had calmed a little since he had been given him. It did not try to fight against him. It was a fact that somewhat disappointed Rome. He didn't want a dog for a partner, there were far too many of those.
Pushing himself off the ground, he sat up. Arms were still held behind him as he gave a small hum. Enough lazing around, it was time to get to ... He gave another yawn, maybe another nap would be fine.
"YO DUDE!! WAKE UP MAN!! YOU CAN'T BE DEAD I'M NOT TRAINED FOR THAT!!"
A rude awakening.
Egan had been minding his own business when all of a sudden there was a dead body in the way! How terrible! The knucklehead trainer didn't hesitate to try and agitate the body in the hopes it was still alive; there was a pokemon that he didn't recognise nearby, one with scary looking claws, but at a time like this there wasn't really any time for fear.
"Hey you pokemon over there, help me revive this guy! I think I can hear a heartbeat!"
He truly was an idiot. Continuing to shake the "body", Egan began to wonder how no one else had noticed the corpse - it wasn't as if there weren't other people around, after all. Besides, this guy was a scientist, from the looks of his coat, and people always paid attention to scientists. Although... if he was a scientist, and if he was dead, the hades virus probably had something to do with it, so touching it in such a flagrant manner probably wasn't the wisest move. Realising this, the metalhead trainer began to wipe his hands on the grass beside the stranger and spitting profusely, afraid to die through his own negligence - albeit a marvel that he hadn't already.
And there was thunder and lightning. His body trembled beneath the man's arms. Eyes flipping open at the movement. Just what on Arceus --
A hand rose to push the intrusion away. "Sleeping." He said briskly, "haven't you ever seen a man sleep?" The zangoose on the side gave a low growl. While he shared no love for his trainer (as of right now, he hadn't), another pestering him meant that he would be bothered as well. And he had been. Calling him because his trainer had died. Laughable.
Rome pressed a hand to his forehead, waiting for things to regain balance and for the ache to ease itself away. In the corner of his eye, he watched them. Had they truly thought him dead? Sleeping on the grass was far from normal, but it wasn't a certain indication of his demise.
"Finished?" He muttered, rubbing his temple. He could feel an ache coming in. "What on Arceus' name caused you to believed I was dead?"
He... he was alive the whole time!? Well, talk about embarrassing! Egan scratched his head sheepishly. That clawed pokemon could have said something. Still, what was done was done, and all that was left to do was explain his admittedly odd behaviour.
"Well you were lying pretty still dude, and that scary pokemon with the claws was just sitting there... I thought... maybe it killed you or something I dunno I dunno I just..." Egan trailed off. It was a horrible excuse, pinning the blame on the stranger's pokemon, but the knucklehead trainer could do no better.
"What pokemon is that anyway? Oh uh, I'm Egan by the way." He asked, apparently seeing no reason to just be on his way. He didn't even ask if the stranger was okay, how inconsiderate!
He stared at the fumbling trainer with an expression that was crossed between amusement and annoyance. So he lied still when he slept? "I see," was all he could say in response to his explanation. It was sufficient enough. Though, ugh, his head. That wasn't going to go away just yet. He'd shaken Rome up pretty good.
"Rome. And the 'scary pokemon with claws' is Zangoose, my partner." The pokemon in question gave another low growl, almost as if tempting the boy to speak. He tugged on his coat and looked if there were any red marks showing that he had gotten attacked. There were none. Just grass stains. He hadn't eaten any berries either.
"You mentioned 'you weren't trained for that,' when I woke up," hard not to remember with how loudly he was yelling it. "Ranger or trainer?"
A Zangoose... that was a new one. Obviously, Egan had never encountered that pokemon before, though since he didn't have a pokedex its presence wasn't really contributing to anything helpful on his part, anyway. Still, the pokemon was that guy's partner, so it couldn't have been as bad as it looked. However, feeling a little cautious, the knucklehead trainer slyly released Eridan from his pokeball. The Absol stood like a sentry, also wary of the mongoose pokemon beside the stranger - well, Rome, as he'd given his name.
"Yeah uh, I'm a trainer, man - see,the Absol's called Eridan, and he's my partner. Are uh, are you sure you're okay? None of my pokemon know any healing moves, but I feel pretty bad for shaking you up so much." He rubbed the back of his head apologetically, though as far as actually rectifying the damage done to the science-y looking man before him the metalhead had done very little.
"You're a... uh, what are you exactly anyway? Why were you out here like that?"
Ah, an absol. They marked the coming of something ... terrible, didn't they? How interesting. Rome thought as Egan introduced him to his pokemon. He supposed he could see the charm. The scythe-like band that protruded from their head was a reminder of that reaper from the stories. "Mind if I scan them?" He asked, though he was already pulling out his pokedex and pointing it at them. Leone scoffed at his trainer's manners. There was no point asking if he was just going to do it anyways.
"The head ache will go away eventually." He waved it off. Yes, his head did throb, but it was lessening. Even with the powers of pokemon, he preferred it to go away on it's own. Besides, allowing him to do this was enough of an apology. A new scan, more data. More information that he needed to get closer to that vaccine and the scourge. Ah, and there it was. The name, Absol, lit up on the screen and he flipped through their information. He had been right about the rumors surrounding the pokemon's type. Their ability to warn people of catastrophes lead them to be thought as the ones who caused them.
He looked up from the pokedex when Egan spoke once more. "... ?" Just why was he lying here? Oh, right. "It's a nice day, isn't it?" He said suddenly. "The warm sun makes you lazy."
"Lazy?! No!! The sun makes you pumped!!" Egan imitated punching as one would a boxing bag, moving with such energy and gusto that the rest of his pokeballs fell from his pockets, opening up and releasing his pokemon. Pagoda the Spiritomb, Jade the NidoranF and Pluto the Poliwag all appeared from the flashes of red lights, wondering what they'd been called out for.
"Gaaaaah! I'm a bit of a klutz! I guess these guys got pumped too!" Said the knucklehead trainer, doing his best to live up to the name.
Speaking of names, Rome hadn't informed him of his job. Although, from the looks of the pokedex that was scanning Eridan, Egan had disturbed a pokemon researcher? Thinking to verify this, the trainer did so, stating,
"Are you a pokemon researcher? That's so cool! How many pokemon have you seen? You can scan my guys if you want! Are you gonna catch 'em all?" Honestly, he was such a child!
Rome watched, eyes widening slightly as more pokemon appeared. He sure generated a lot of energy, just as he said. He gave a small chuckle. It seemed like he would be an interesting trainer to watch grow up. Fumbling as he was now, it would be interesting if he were to change once he faced the scourge.
"Uh, yeah." Rome grinned, peering up from his pokedex. "Quite a few. I don't have too many." He signaled for the trainer to come close as he scanned each of his pokemon. "It's a simple device. Like a camera, we just point and, instead of shooting, it scans." A very simplistic explanation, but it seemed suitable enough. No need to get into too much detail.
And it did just as he said. One by one, each of his pokemon showed up on the screen. First was his spiritomb. A haunting pokemon emerging from a stone. It was a swirl of a ghost, trapped by a curse, or so the legend goes. A dark and ghost type, a strong combination and having no weaknesses. He was a good pokemon to have. Then the female nidoran. Its horn might have been less sharp than its male counterpart, but it was more deadly. Hah, they do say a woman's wrath was worse than the devil. Then lastly, was the little poliwag.
