This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Esme's crimson eyes narrowed. She had a feeling that she knew what this trick was about to be. "Achilles," the woman said. "Confuse Ray, again, then I want a good Fire Punch." The Haunter chuckled to himself, blew a raspberry at J, then released another haze of dark energy. It swirled about the Lairon's body, before the ghost-type Pokémon rushed in with a clawed fist raised. Orange flames silhouetted the Pokémon's curled fist, the fire light flickering off the cavernous walls as Achilles thrust the flaming limb forward. There was a rush he got out of battling, one that could only be satiated by facing more and more opponents. A crooked grin was on his face; he was going to win this.
the fire punch struck dust squarely on the chin, and it tossed its head about, trying to gather its senses before the confuse ray struck it soon after. it blinked in confusion, and soon was enveloped in a bright light.
dust had evolved into an aggron. it didn't know outrage, though, so the caverns were safe for the time being. it swept its iron tail powerfully across the darkness, raging and bellowing as the confusion set it. it also attempted to use autotomize.
Neo scanned the aggron, because for some reason, she'd never done so in her travels.
"I have a persim berry, if you don't want to wait for him to shake off the confusion," Neo offered, berry in an outstretched hand.
"Also, a warning, I'm pretty sure any self-respecting haunter knows Curse." Hers certainly did, and she couldn't imagine it being left out of a trainer's arsenal.
The Haunter giggled as the Aggron smashed its head against the cavern wall. The sound bounced around the walls of the gym, and he clapped his hands together to add to the deafening noise. His plan was to hit hard and to hit fast, so the Pokémon readied a second Fire Punch at the Aggron. Achilles was not sparing the steel-rock Pokémon, it appeared, of any hits, and Esme was more than happy to pick on the sturdy creature's type weakness.
Right on schedule, the Haunter grinned maliciously, eyes flashing a sinister purple as it Cursed the Aggron. The Pokémon seemed to float lower to the ground for a moment as it sacrificed its own health in order to eat away at the Aggron's own energy too.
Dodging Achilles' curse had been one way to make the Haunter particularly angry. He growled, pseudo-steam escaping from his slit-like nostrils as the lumbering Aggron managed to turn his back in the nick of time. He was so visibly upset by this that he ended up with the Pokémon's metallic tail in his face. He was right on task with a Sucker Punch, surging forward with a sideways hook at the Aggron's face. He clapped his hands and began to sway his index fingers to and fro, as if to hypnotize the opponent into a sleep. The Haunter's eyes glowed purple as the Hypnosis began to take effect.
dust bellowed as soon as the sucker punch made contact with its face. it reared up to its full height, growling at the haunter before sweeping its iron tail towards the ghost-type. it let loose a metal sound at the haunter to prevent any more of its tricks from being cast upon it, and soon the echoing sounds turned into a massive roar.
The cacophony would, typically, be music to the Haunter's ears. In a Pokémon battle, they were a massive distraction. The Pokémon did manage to pirouette out of Iron Tail's path, but instead, got a face full of of an ugly, metallic sound. Achilles screeched, quickly retreating to his Pokéball. He wanted none of this. Esme blinked, and when another Pokémon did not reveal itself, the woman nodded towards the Litwik at her side. The Pokémon giggled, letting loose a Fire Spin of purple flames, and topped it off with a Haze. The Di Manes gym turned even darker than it already was as a black mist hung suspended in the air.
dust immediately set to work another autotomize, but was prevented from doing so as it was trapped in a vortex of ghostly flames. it then used earth power on the litwick, sending bursts of energy from where it was trapped.
The Litwick snickered to itself, watching the Aggron rendered helpless by its Fire Spin. Hector was feeling rather proud of himself. The Pokémon twirled about, only to get hit in the face by a burst of energy from the floor. He let out an unearthly shriek, the purple flame atop his head flickering briefly, before he retaliated with a curious Minimize. The ghost Pokémon slowly shrank to the size of a coin, but the Flame Burst he aimed at the Aggron was, by no means, diminished in power.
The Litwick chuckled to himself as the bursts of energy from the floor missed him completely. Such was the advantage of his tiny size. The purple fire on his head glowed brighter, until it finally released itself in the form of a Will-o-Wisp, twirling in the direction of the Aggron with all intentions of leaving behind a burn. He sent another Flame Burst in the Aggron's direction as well in hopes of leaving behind some extra damage for the steel Pokémon.
the will-o-wisp was swallowed in the swirling flames that trapped dust. the flame burst struck the aggron, but dust forged on anyway, using its earth power to assault the litwick again.
Hector was feeling particularly successful today. It didn't look like the Aggron would be escaping his Fire Spin any time soon. The purple flicker of flames atop his head glows brighter, before bursting into more flames as he uses a Flame Burst attack. The ghost Pokémon feels confident; just a few more fiery attacks, and the Aggron should be down, he hopes. Esme's face, on the other hand, shows no signs of how she feels towards the fight. A battle is a battle, and if J cannot win this match, she has a duty to stop a soldier in danger from continuing on.
let's see if a gym battle can hit four pages, really. J still had this litwick and a haunter to defeat.
the aggron remained trapped in fire spin. somehow, it managed to dodge the flame burst, and proceeded on freeing itself from its trap. dust would then use earth power as per normal.
