This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Hector had a feeling that the Aggron would be able to free itself soon enough. He manages to dodge the Earth Power that Dust sends his way, and feeling rather confident in his battling ability, blows a Will-o-Wisp in the steel Pokémon's direction. The blue flames seem to cackle, like smaller versions of the Litwick they'd come from. They flicker, briefly, before surging headlong towards the Aggron. Hector decides to spin things about a bit differently too, adding a Shadow Ball to the awful mixture for kicks.
Meanwhile, Esme is quietly impressed by the steel Pokémon's resilience.
J didn't know how esme managed to pull off all three moves in one turn. since we've already hit fucking page three on a gym thread, we're just going to assume will-o-wisp never happened.
the earth power was dodged, but never mind. dust took the shadow ball to its chest, its steel plating holding strong as it unleashed another earth power towards the litwick.
It's another Earth Power that smacks the Litwick in the face. The Pokémon shrieks, fake tears forming in the corner of its eyes, before it tries to unleash a Will-o-Wisp. Hector thinks he quite liked the Aggron while it was trapped in the vortex of fire, but it wasn't the same thrill from the fight. He gathers up his resolve once again and fires off another Flame Burst.
He can go at this all day long, or so he tells himself.
He's actually getting kind of tired.
(oh awkward yes let's pretend that will-o-wisp never happened)
That Earth Power had been the final straw. The Litwick yelped as a blast of earth energy finished it off. Esme returned the fallen ghost Pokémon to its Pokéball. The creature had proven its resilience enough. "Achilles, see what you can do," the gym leader says as the Haunter emerges from his capsule. Whittled by the earlier match, he still manages to find enough energy to aim a Fire Punch at the Aggron.
before the aggron was struck by the fire punch, J quickly recalled the beast and released apex from its pokéball. the pupitar took the brunt of the fire punch, and hissed angrily before retaliating. it summoned its usual sandstorm to back itself up, then quickly unleashed its dark pulse.
The Haunter was baffled as wind began to swirl within the gym. Where was this storm coming from? The Pokémon grumbled to himself, rubbing sand out of his eyes. The grains of sand were sharp as they passed through his opaque body, enough of a distraction to get hit in the face by the Dark Pulse. Achilles shrieked, eyes rolling to the back of his head as the Haunter collapsed to the floor.
the slow clap was rather disorienting to J. he had no idea if it was esme or the haunter doing the clapping, but he assumed the shriek meant that apex had managed to defeat the haunter. he recalled the pupitar, and watched the pokéball swallow the brute.
the sands were still strong in the cave, though, even as apex disappeared.
"This is yours then," Esme says, pressing a badge, Spell Tag, Shadow Claw TM, and money into J's hands. "As per League rules, these are yours to keep," the woman says. "... use the gifts well. They are to aid you in your journey. Don't waste them." She's careful to end the statement on a stern note.
