This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

J nodded. "yeah. i've got camp," he said, jerking his head towards another sector of the ruined institute. his camp wasn't much, but it had a fire. and a shitton of pokémon lurking around.
elias looks off into the distance, towards the place that J had gestured. "you have anyone else there?" he was thinking of one person in particular. and he prayed she wasn't there.

"cool." elias says, a silent breath of relief escaping his lips. thank god. "i guess if you don't mind me staying the night, i could help keep watch or something?"

elias straightened his back. "there's no need for that- he started, objecting to J's previous statement. "i can help." the boy assures, before adding a quick: "it's the least i can do?" it sounds more like a question than it does a definite fact.

J shrugged yet again. "if you like," said the trainer. he had no objections to two people watching camp at night, but two people doing a job one person could felt redundant.
"so you're good with taking turns then?" he asks quietly, taking a look around again. he had almost forgotten where they were- that was dangerous. elias still had to be on guard. always. vertigo

"that's good to know," said the other trainer stoically as he turned, and headed back to camp. he glanced back occasionally to see that elias had kept up with his long strides.
camp was simple. several pokémon gathered around a fire, most of them steel-types and looked like they were able to take a severe beating while giving back lots of damage. (actually, pretty useless outside beating shit up, but nvm.)
elias follows J, arriving at the camp just a split second after he had. "you have a preference for steel types?" he asks, although he already knows the answer. the boy slips off his backpack and squats, rummaging through the bag for his tent. vertigo

J nodded wordlessly as he tossed a blackened piece of wood into the fire. he sat on a flattened patch of grass, and lifted a mysterious item wrapped in aluminium foil out of the flames. it rolled over to where elias was.
it ... probably was a potato. or some sort of cousin to it, anyway, but edible nonetheless.
"you can have that," J said, before prodding another one of those mysterious tubers towards himself.
"cool." he mumbles, staring down at the aluminum-wrapped potato-ish thing. the boy wasn't quite convinced he should be eating that...whatever it was. regardless, he picked it up to be polite and unwrapped it slowly, revealing the charred skin and pinkish insides. "uh..." he began, a little nervous on how to ask the question that was to come.
