This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"twice," J replied without the need to think. "bellona hills, to be specific. fought with thalia, the person i told you about." elias would need to meet her during the second meeting.
"it was okay." quite confusing initially, but by the time he fought a second time, it wasn't a big deal anymore. it was almost as if he had gotten used to the rhythm. "we won, none of us lost anything."
"how did you do it?" elias asks. he hasn't fought any yet- and he doesn't think he ever will. the boy won't admit it, but he doesn't have the willpower. "aren't they supposed to be like, really strong?"

asking J to elaborate on his exploits was like asking a wall to tell what it had heard all along. the trainer paused, and sipped his hot chocolate as a pretense to think. "yeah," the trainer eventually said, agreeing that the scourge were strong. still, neither of his pokémon had been knocked out by them before. probably because they were steel-types, thus, they were more resilient towards attacks.
he couldn't really remember the details other than a lot of attacks flying around. half the time his pokémon had been incapacitated by some sort of status debuff. the other half had been spent repeating the same attacks until their opponents fell.
"you're not worried they'll..." he trails off, lost in thought. "bite your pokemon during the battle?" wouldn't that be pretty common? he didn't understand what was preventing the scourge pokemon from starting to eat a trainer's pokemon during combat.

J hadn't thought much about the way scourge pokémon functioned. he thought that as long as they were vaccinated, they were fine, scourge bite or not. that, and most of his pokémon were coated in steel or made entirely out of it. not exactly a bidoof lunch.
"oh yeah." elias remembers, finishing off the hot chocolate from before. "well, was thalia worried, or..? he asks another question. elias needs info- he doesn't want any of his pokemon to die in combat.

"honestly, i've been trying to avoid them." elias admits. he doesn't think he's ready to fight them yet, especially if J advises he gang up on them. he doesn't have anyone to gang up with. "i probably will for a while."

no point in dampening someone's spirit, actually. J didn't think it was practical. the first time he stepped in nerio, he had been involved in a scourge battle after thalia had met him in the pokémon center. ever since then he'd never really seen the need to avoid scourge.
