This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"... i think," J mumbled, still somewhat dazed. his vision failed to focus and all he saw was a blurry mass of objects. he was pretty sure he was looking at neo, but his eyes were still feeding him information on what the table looked like.
there was still a mass on his tongue that tasted horrible. he wasn't sure what it was, but his brain eventually told him that it was bitter powder.
"shit," he groaned, and leaned back, his head resting against the wall.
He thinks. ...He thinks what? Or was he just saying that he was currently thinking, because Neo supposed that was also a step up from previous circumstances. He still looked barely conscious, and Neo wasn't too sure it was a good idea to move him. Not that she was strong enough to drag him off anywhere even if she wanted.
Neo took J's arm and started guiding him out of the restaurant. He seemed to be walking alright though--unsteady, but as long as he stayed conscious and upright, Neo counted that as good enough. Could be worse. Could be not walking.
"Are you staying at the pokemon center? You should probably lay down. Ideally somewhere with medical professionals nearby."
J watched hespera unfold in a myriad of colors and lines that he couldn't quite process. at this point, he suspected that there had been something strange in the seafood he had ordered. probably some eelektross venom.
"what?" too many words. J couldn't process. "... where?"
the bright lights of the pokémon center gleamed in the distance, and J averted his gaze. too bright. this felt like a seafood-induced hangover of some sort.
"Pokemon center," Neo repeated. Hell with it. She didn't care if he'd been staying in a five-star hotel. She wanted him wherever Nurse Joy could get to him within thirty seconds. "This way."
Neo released a charizard, because she was something like five feet tall and wasn't very good at clearing a way. Hera was pretty good at keeping refugees a few feet back as they pressed onward.
J groggily followed neo, but it was quickly apparent that he was now able to walk in a straight line. it was a marked improvement from the unsteady walking from just now.
he felt better now - much better than in the restaurant - but there was definitely something wrong with his vision. he saw a dark mass off to the side, and had it not been for human voices, J would have assumed them scourge.
The charizard cleared the path to the pokemon center, and Neo guided J to a chair. "Sit," she said.
"Feeling any better? Should I call an ambulance? Because I don't think I can. Pretty sure the hospitals aren't accepting anyone but refugees that're missing limbs and other important bits."
"i'm fine," J mumbled after he sat down. he almost lost his balance, probably because he hadn't expected to be sitting all of a sudden. he held his head in his hands.
Neo took a seat next to J. She put a hand on his shoulder--meant to put an arm around, but she realized that was an awful distance for a small person to reach. "If you say so."
She was content to say nothing for a while, just watching J to make sure his condition didn't worsen. "Anything you need?"
speaking started to become a chore. the poisoning was getting to his head, and even though a voice in J's mind told him to give bitter powder a shot, he refused to. what if it tasted horrible all over again?
Neo nodded; she might not have if he'd asked for bitter powder. She stood up, looking for a vending machine. "Be right back. Don't faint while I'm gone."
She was only gone for a couple minutes, waiting a short line at the vending machine, before returning with a bottle of fresh water. In hindsight, Moomoo Milk might've been a smarter choice, but there was something to be said for the simplicity of water.
by the time neo was back, J would seem considerably better than before. he got up from the chair, and had started walking about the pokémon center, despite a chansey harassing him to sit the fuck down again.
he glanced at neo when she returned, and nodded his thanks. "fresh water?" he said, opening it and taking a sip.
