This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Aksel had always loved ghosts. He got chills in his spine knowing that such famous dead people were buried somewhere within these halls. He grew excited knowing that he was about to face off against a gym leader who specialized in ghosts. Aksel had a few of his own ghosts, but he had the option of using only three Pokemon in this gym. He showed up aware of this rule.
The gym seemed quite dim, his eyes squinting through the dark, hoping to see the figure of the female he'd be fighting against. One of his hands were resting on his belt, where all of his Pokeballs were hanging. Aksel thought it would have been smart to bring along his flashlight. Or maybe his his Vulpix. The gym could use a little fire.
"Did I miss the party?" Aksel called out, hearing a soft echo. This place gave him the heebie jeebies. But he liked it. "Esme?" That was the leaders name, wasn't it? Of course it was. He knew who she was. Aksel had never met her in person, but it had been a small dream of his. The trainer was fanboying on the inside.
"Were you expecting someone else?" Esme asked, her sarcasm carrying through the thick darkness. "There's no one else here but the slumbering dead, and we'd be wise to hope they don't see fit to drop in for a visit."
Esme released a litwick, whose flame brought a meagre amount of light onto the field. With the light, she could see the trainer--and he was obviously a trainer (or researcher, perhaps) with the pokeballs upon his belt. Only the most overqualified of messengers carried a full team.
Aksel's face lit up. He could hardly see the woman through the dark, but he heard her voice. It was all he needed to know that he wasn't alone in here. "No! You were just the woman I wanted to see. Thanks for showing up!" the boy laughed, knowing full well that it was her duty as a gym leader to be here for the trainers. She needed to test them.
"Is that your choice?" He nodded toward the candle. "Guessing you won't mind if I take first hit, huh? I want to get this party started!" Aksel asked, one of the Pokeballs expanding at he let loose his personal favorite Pokemon. The Gabite.
The shark let out his deafening roar, squinting through the dark in search of the little flame that was on his opponent's head. Finnicken started the battle off with a Sandstorm, his feet stomping an arms waving until the wind and dirt started to pick up within the arena. Then, without warning, he breathed a purple fire of Dragonbreath toward the dim flame.
Esme shrugged. "If only I had a choice," she deadpanned. If only she had a choice, she'd patrol the outer edges of Di Manes or even stray away from the caverns to assist the battle against the scourge however she could without shirking her duties to the crypts.
But instead she battled trainers. Duty mattered enough to her that she barely complained, and if forced to admit, she'd say she enjoyed the battles whenever they were worth her time. It was always good to see the work of future champions in the making. "At least you have energy."
The sandstorm barraged Hector from all sides, grains of the stuff clogging up its fire. The litwick cried out in dismay and retaliated with a burst of scorching flame.

Finnicken wouldn't have allowed that will-o-wisp if he had a choice. He knew it meant imminent knock out for him. But the little flames made contact with his skin, burning the dragon. He knew what this meant. It meant his time was running out and he had to do all the damage he could.
Gabite grunted as he kicked up sand and dirt from the arena's floor until a small tornado formed from the debris. He fired it toward the Litwick, attempting to trap him in a SAND TOMB, to gain a type advantage of the enemy. Then, he used HONE CLAWS, preparing for following attacks he could let loose.
The sandstorm was already giving the litwick a hard time, and when the barrage of sand suddenly tightened around the litwick, heavily restricting his movement, the ghost pokemon cried in in frustration.
"Calm down," Esme said. The storm concerned her more than the tomb, and rightfully so. The litwick couldn't last very long with the sand wearing it down. "And hex."

Finnicken DODGED the hex, sliding under the attack and charging toward the enemy. He kept low to the ground. The previous used hone claws had supplied him with a nice accuracy boost, assuring that his next hit should make contact. Or, at least, he hoped. The Gabite lunged forward with a DRAGON CLAW, his glowing green claws slashing toward the Litwick. With the sandstorm and sand tomb in place, he thought he'd already done well in this battle. But his own movements caused the burn to hurt the dragon further.
Still flailing against the confines of the tomb, the litwick narrowly flickered in and out of corporealness to dodge the dragon claw. No amount of phasing could break it out of the tomb though.
Still frustrated, the litwick lashed out again with another hex

The hex made contact this time. Finnicken didn't have the energy to avoid it. His skin was tingling and burning. And, all of a sudden, the dragon hit the ground and his eyes shut. He didn't have the energy to fight anymore. The burn had taken effect, and the Litwick had gotten the best of him.
burn turn 3. gabite KO'd.
Aksel laughed nervously, a little embarrassed that he didn't have any burn heals on him to prevent this situation. He'd have to visit the Pokemart after this, to ensure it never happened again. He returned the unconscious Gabite to its ball. In it's place, there was another dragon. Aksel's new friend, Alduin.
Alduin realized that it was his turn to finish this battle off. So he charged in with a DRAGON CHOP. But then, the dragon started to flail his arms around and shake his tail in the most ridiculous DRAGON DANCE. He may not have been the best dancer, but he danced with all his heart. Sadly, not having the ground type that the Gabite had, the Axew was also buffeted by the sandstorm.
If it meant anything in Aksel's defense, just about no one had ever brought burn heals into a battle against Esme. Esme had always wondered why. "Teaching trainers to carry status healing items at all times is apparently one of my informal duties."
The litwick saw the dragon chop incoming, and still entombed in sand, Litwick went down like a rock. ...A decent showing for the trainer, she assessed.
Esme recalled the litwick and sent out a yamask.

Alduin was distraught that the haze cancelled out the fact that his dragon dance had even happened. How could the Yamask do that to him? It had been the best dance he'd done so far! The approaching shadow ball that pummeled into the poor dragon's body didn't help either. Or the continuing sandstorm that pelted at his body.
Axew climbed back to his feet, grabbing the corners of his mouth and pulling it open wide to give the Yamask his scariest SCARY FACE. He jumped forward then with an DRAGON CLAW. Aksel shouldn't have brought dragons to a ghost fight.
Bashfully, the human was rubbing the back of his head, giving a nervous laugh. "Guess I was just crossing your fingers that you wouldn't have your Litwick on you?" Aksel suggested the plausible idea. But he should show up to every gym battle, expecting every possibility. This was a lesson learned.
The yamask tittered as the sandstorm nearly cast its mask astray.
"Sandstorm's almost over, Andromeda. You can deal with it," Esme advised. Tough love.
From across the stadium, Esme stared impassively at Aksel. Finally, her lips thinned, smothering a smile. "I may have bad news for you, regarding burns."

Aksel was near punching himself in the face right now over his lack of burn heals. Why did he do this to himself? How did trainers beat this chick without burn heals? She had to be kidding. No one could win without burn heals. He watched in dismay as his Axew was affected by the burn.
But the Axew wasn't just going to stand there. With limited time, he had to do what he could! He DRAGON DANCEd again. Then lunged forward with an ASSURANCE, which he knew full well the Yamask would find an easy way to dodge, but it was the only attack that Alduin had going for him.

Aksel wondered if it was illegal to punch a gym leader in the face? He wanted to have a chance at winning. But it wasn't like him to lose his cool. So he took a deep breath and put on a smile. If he lost, he could try again.
With the aid of the previously used dragon dance, Axew was giving a shot at three attacks. But it also changed his one defensive attack into an offensive. So, Axew went all out. He started with his SLASH, which he knew would have no effect on a ghost. But it was the only physical attack he had. This was followed by another ASSURANCE, and a DRAGON CLAW too.
