The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

the blastoise's actions were commendable. J still held a fork in his hand as he dodged the snapping jaws of the huntail. he threw the fork at it like a javelin. it phased through the huntail.
"what have we unleashed," J muttered to thalia, only to see her hit herself in the face. "uh."
the huntail was hit by the bite attack, and it roared angrily.
the kitchen was rather cramped with two humans, a huntail and a blastoise in it. J decided against sending out a pokémon of his own. instead, he threw more bitter powder.

"We need to stay at home for the rest of our lives," Thalia realized. "We need to never go anywhere ever again."
Blastoise watched his trainer hit herself in the face and got nervous. He agreed with J. "Blastoise?" he said, and then decided to take control of the situation.

the fact that the kitchen was now flooded with water was bad news for J and thalia, because it was good news for the huntail rat king. they thankfully had blastoise on their side.
the water had risen up to J's calves after blastoise was done with its hydro pump.
"how about a bite," J suggested to blastoise, then turned to thalia.
"tha--" J's sentence was cut short by a dull sound of metal against skin. thalia had apparently hit herself in the face again. "put the staff down," he said firmly, not wanting to run the risk of thalia disfiguring herself.
he placed his hands on thalia's shoulders and turned her away from the huntail. if she didn't see it, it would be better, right?
Blastoise was very ashamed of the mess he had created. He used bite on the huntail rat king somewhat sheepishly.
Thalia put down the staff and didn't resist when J turned her away from the rat king. It did work in the general sense that she was no longer hitting herself in the face with a magic staff every few moments. But she was still sobbing and generally distraught.
"We're cursed," she said. "What is wrong with us?"
"nothing's wrong," said J in a steady voice, "we're just favored by adventure. we're lucky to always survive them." barely. usually in one piece. but still.
thankfully, the huntail rat king didn't seem to remember how to dodge attacks. it took the bite admirably and retaliated with one of its own.

J disappeared. he was sucked into a vicious current in shallow waters.
"I suppose that's one way of looking at it," she said, wiping her eyes. J's voice cut off in the middle of speaking, and Thalia whipped around.
"Fuck," she said rather eloquently, and dove into the water.

Blastoise hovered, turtle paws paddling the air. He used bite on huntail, for lack of any other commands, and because he still remembered the disaster of striking out on his own.
The blastoise shrugged off scary face and lunged forward with another bite. He would atone for his past mistakes--he would bring the ghost-head of this huntail to his trainer. Somehow.
the huntail refused to let itself be captured. it flipped the way out of the bite attack and went back with a whirlpool to trap blastoise. it was determined to enslave this warrior to serve itself. maybe it'd stand a chance against these conniving humans.
