She almost appeared a proper ranger. A life spent in the great outdoors kept her fit and healthy, and Serenity didn't bother with upkeeping her appearance besides a brush for her hair. Her clothes were practical, resilient, and easy to move in.

Not that she didn't like pretty things. Serenity loved pretty things, but there was a time and a place for them. The long hike from Mt. Aurae to Juno City was not one of them.

Anyway, the reason Serenity didn't quite appear a proper ranger was for the twin hatchets she carried criss-crossed over her lower back.

Juno City had been confounding at first. Serenity had asked four different people for directions, but at last she'd ended up at the Ranger Union. (She lost her way at a roundabout. Twice. The same roundabout. There aren't any roundabouts on Mt. Aurae, okay.)

"Good morning," she said with a smile, bright and energetic despite it being about 8AM. "I'm Serenity Jones, here to become a ranger. I mean, I will if a pokemon partner will take me."

...It was going to be a very long walk back home if she couldn't find a suitable partner. Serenity tried not to think too hard about that.

A pachirisu bounded across the floor in front of Serenity, a sheaf of important looking folders stuffed with paper tied to his back. He stopped and looked up at her before shrugging and continuing across the hall.

After a moment, there was the click of boots on stone and Sa'di appeared, a neat line of pokemon swaying in her wake. She cast an approving eye over Serenity's hatchets.

"I'm sure someone will be suited for you," she said, and stepped aside to let Serenity present herself to the pokemon.

Serenity observed all of the pokemon, mixing and mingling with them, for a long time.

...For a really, really long time. Like lunch and dinner with the mons and then a Disney movie too. Like, this was a hard decision, okay?

At the end of the day, she'd settled on the chikorita, or perhaps the chikorita had settled on her.

Sa'di didn't mind the wait. She'd rather a new recruit take a few hours (or days) and end up with the right pokemon, rather than rush through the process and end up mismatched.

Rushing through things in Kohaku these days tended to not end well for anyone involved. Especially when scourge were on the other end.

The girl made her choice, however, and Sa'di smiled as the chikorita stepped forward.

"I wish you the best of luck."
