This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Their relationship, from the start, has always been complicated. Jayden first recieved natu from its previous trainer, a good man turned gambler looking to pay off his debts in any way possible, and only kept it to skip the trouble of having to get one from cypress's lab. Natu's previous trainer pampered and adored it, so Natu has no fighting prowess, and Jayden takes every opportunity to exploit this factor, justifying his actions towards his pokemon as an attempt to make it 'useful' and not 'useless'. While he verbally berates all his pokemon equally as much, natu is the only member of his team that Jayden physically abuses, and on a daily basis. Yet its also the only member of his team that he refuses to let go of (despite constant threats to do to), because natu's drive for power pushes him to push himself, seeing the dual type as a mirror for all of his inner flaws.
skarmory, level 1oo, keen eye, spd+acc stat boost, egg shop - $200 sand attack, feint, spikes, autotomize, air slash, steel wing, assurance, defog, swords dance, x scissor
Cold-blooded, ruthless and the very symbol of power, Skarmory represents everything that Jayden hopes to become in the future. It's intelligent, powerful, honing extreme precision in its claws and merciless without coming off as bloodthirsty - even as a hatchling, Jayden looked up to Skarmory, and after training and comparing the creature alongside its similar counterpart, natu, its hard not to notice the difference. While Jayden feels most affectionate towards it, Skarmory doesn't feel the same, adopting a 'mercenary' viewpoint on the world early on: while it follows Jayden's commands most of the time, it won't hesitate to do something different if it feels that its own ideas are the best course of action. Skarmory represents something that's out of reach, from the 'lone wolf' approach to its trainer and teammates, down to the way it dips and spins among the stars in the dead of night.
A friendly, energetic creature, zebstrika treats life like a person treats gambling. Constantly doing high-risk things like magma hopping or sliding down steep, ice-covered mountains, zebstrika dreams big, hoping one day to become a hot shot through perfecting actions that are often life or death situations without giving a care to the world. It's ultimate claim to fame is its speed, outmatched by any of its teammates and able to get it out of any tight predicaments, from dangling precautiously at the edge of a cliff to avoiding attacks while battling, something that he likes doing with a passion. zebstrika is hasty and impatient, a confident try-hard who almost doesn't care about his life as long as he gets his ten minutes of fame. And he can plow ahead as fast and hard as he wants, but what Jayden finds ominous is the thought of 'slow down, you'll crash' that surfaces in his mind every time he's around the creature.
A horribly timid creature with unusually high levels of anxiety and paranoia who Jayden can't seem to empathize with, no matter how hard he tries. Instead, he shoves the thought in his head that all it needs is some time in the training arena, and that practice will eventually lead to perfection and the purge of its flaws. Gallade prefers to stay in the shadows of others and act as a supporting role, favoring group battles as opposed to one on one showdowns, where the spotlight is forced to shine on it, because it's constantly worried that it'll mess up somewhere, or that it'll fail to meet up to Jayden's expectations. Clingy, Gallade also has issues with abandonment and being accepted into a team, only opening itself up to a few pokemon and often outright refusing to let the boy out of its range of sight, in fear that he'll never come back, leaving it with no place to go. Jayden's not sure why he pushes it so hard, but he does.
Flip is the only team member that Jayden gave a name to - a bit relucantly, but its there. As a baby and even now, in its evolved form, Flip is carefree, the only one without some major flaw but also the one Jayden least understands. The creature is loyal, almost to a fault, but in times of urgency it's shown to be able to think for itself and quite well, at that. To an extent, it reminds Jayden of a dog - perhaps his opinion was skewed by gossip that told him that, but it's there -, following commands without complaint and taking wins and losses with equal bursts of confidence and excitement, and never seems to be troubled by any problems. With a one-track mind and an extremely short attention span Flip never does anything if there's no purpose behind it, but has the tendency to fall short when it loses sight of one goal for another.
zoroark, level 1oo, illusion, hp+acc stat boost, egg shop - $200 hone claws, agility, night slash, scary face, night daze, taunt, snatch
Their relationship is complicated. Not like natu, almost the other way around. Zoroark is prideful, pompous, headstrong and arrogant, almost outright refusing to follow Jayden's orders unless they're in an extremely life-threatening situation, in which it might grudgingly oblige. It's confident in its actions but withdrawn and feral off the battlefield, baring its teeth when Jayden tries to come near it and often found scratching at something hard, sharpening its claws or relieving the day's stress. When Zoroark makes mistakes, it never apologizes, even if what it did was blatantly wrong, and acts rude and stuck-up, preferring working solo than touching any of the other members of its trainer's team. Jayden's not sure why Zoroark sticks around, because the creature has made every intention of wanting that the more Jayden tries to restrain him, but always comes back. It's often seen dozing or dreaming, the look on its face better than any emotion its shown in reality.
"into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely."
rattata, level 18, guts, hp stat boost, starter - professor cypress tackle, tail whip, focus energy, quick attack, bite, hyper fang, flame wheel
after a daring escape and stranger series of coincidences and events, rattata landed in the hands of lacey, leaving behind life in the cages of Cypress's laboratories to 'travel the world'. it's adventurous, carrying all the traits an adventurer should possess - daring, persistent, and a seemingly endless supply of energy to burn. Excelling in the field of speed after many round of practice in attempted 'cagebreaks', rattata is sneaky and clever, a strategist with an IQ on par with that of a adolescent. And, like humans, rattata's ambition is big, living off the adrenaline rush that the thrill of danger brings. More a thinker than a battler of brute force by nature, it likes to be right, disliking it when its plans go haywire, or its theories are proven wrong.
horsea, level 2o, swift swim, hp stat boost, egg shop - $200 bubble, smokescreen, leer, water gun, focus energy, bubblebeam, clear smog
Whether it's dreaming about the future or reflecting on the past, horsea's always got its head in the clouds, always has somebody to look up to and always strives to get better, so it can become big one day. In some ways, horsea is a realist, but it's as far away from optimism as a pokemon can get without becoming a pessimist, and horsea doesn't see itself as one. Plagued by an endless question of 'what if?', horsea spends most of its time fretting, the flutters in its motions when swimming broadcasting that to the world, and while it's not bogged down by the past, it's frightened for the future, and what logical sense predicts will happen in what's otherwise uncertain. Paranoid, it's hard for horsea to trust, and while it doesn't disobey orders in battle, there's the constant haunt of betrayal right around the corner that may lead it to falter in the most crucial of situations.
meditite, level 2o, pure power, hp stat boost, egg shop - $200 bide, meditate, confusion, detect, hidden power, mind reader, fake out
Impulsive, instinctive, with a temper to match its stride, meditite is anything but a stunning example of its oxymoronic typing - often thinking before it acts. Every ounce of its energy goes towards fueling its anger toward the most irrational things, and while it might've started off with much more than its fellow hatchlings, medidite is irritable and hostile toward the rest of the world as a result, often speaking with fists rather than communicating with words, something it should otherwise excel at. With a typical 'bully' attitude, it dislikes large crowds with an almost claustrophobic stance, and tends to avoid them at all costs, dubbing itself a 'lone wolf'. When fights break out, meditite won't hesitate to egg both sides on as a spectator, although there are times it'll join in the heat of battle, if need be.
drifloon, level 2o, unburden, hp stat boost, trade - jayden constrict, minimize, gust, focus energy, payback, ominous wind, disable, haze
Eccentric, to say the least. On the outside, drifloon appears curious and observant, but like the golden sheen to its virtually transparent outer layer, what's inside is a very different story. Born in the hands of a different trainer and passed over in favor of its more powerful peers, drifloon is incredibly self-conscious, clingy, shifting from its more 'eager to please' outlook that it started out with to a bitter standpoint, where it almost shies away from humans. And while it considers itself distrustful and suspicious, drifloon's flaw lies in the fact that it's gullible, the most gullible pokemon that Lacey claims 'she's ever seen'. Quick to believe and quick to trust, almost as if its been imbedded into it by nature, drifloon takes betrayal and lies much more seriously than others, but only because it first believed so passionately that what was false would be the truth.
A simple-minded creature, swinub is normal, ordinary, and most comfortable in a supporting role, its element. Like the rest of its peer, swinub follows order without much complaint - unlike its peers, it lacks the ambition and drive that it sometimes needs to maximize its potential, often considering things a 'waste of time', or just 'too much work' to bother with. Carefree, almost to the point of being outright lazy, Swinub always takes it among itself to put forth the very least amount of effort needed into a task, sometimes stalling to push restraints to its limits - one of swinub's key skills, and something it actually works towards improving, but only so it can get out of more extra work in the future. When it's forced into tasks, swinub's approach is slow, methodical, harboring the strict belief that life is a big trade off - what effort is put in, determines what outcome it receives. Disregarding most theories of fate, luck, and coincidences, swinub regards the world in shades of black and white, preferring what presently lays before it rather than the future or past, which serve to add-on as complications.
