This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

Challenging the only member of the Elite 4 who was actually doing anything against the scourge to a pokemon battle was a ludicrous choice of action.
But the facts remained the facts. Thalia was strong. The scourge were still stronger. Any edge she could claw her way up onto was an edge worth reaching out for, and the Sword Seal was not the least of those edges.
She trailed through the halls of the Pax Institute like a ghost, carrying togepi in her arms and looking for Donovan.
Donovan was a little busy--not too busy for a battle, but Thalia would need to wait a few minutes.
His metagross carried a stack of scourge corpses on its back (a researcher would see them and weep), which it deposited ingloriously in a stinking, ash-filled ditch in the ground. Donovan retrieved a bit of petrol and dropped a lit match into the pit. Fwoom, it went. "Fwoom," he agreed, the fire reflecting in his eyes.
"Hey, girl scout," he called, spotting a head of pink hair heading his way. "You're in the wrong part of town. This isn't a good place to sell cookies."
He lit a cigarette from the fire beside him, took a drag. "So you here for a battle against me, or against one of them? Or do you really have cookies, because that would be a nice change of pace."
"Already fought the ones I could find," Thalia said. "I'm here for you. I have some chocolate chip energy bars if you'd like one, though."
Cookies didn't travel well. The crumbs got everywhere and nothing would get them out.
She gazed at the pit of crackling scourge bodies.
"Nice to see someone in a position of authority actually doing something," she offered. "Kind of a rare sight these days." She felt very tired. She didn't really want to fight him, honestly. Togepi squirmed in her arms like he could sense her treacherous thoughts.
"Thanks, but I'll pass on the energy bars. Now, if you had coffee, I'd have to think about it."
The metagross creaked a little, as if stretching. It was time for a trainer battle, it seemed. Just what it wanted after a hard day's work--thought no pokemon ever. Nevertheless, it levitated and crossed over to stand before Thalia, a fair distance away.
"Chin up," he suggested to her with an easy smile. "All work and no play makes... whatever-your-name-is a dull boy. Girl. Sorry. I'll get it right next time."
He wondered if she'd start with the togepi. Donovan had never been challenged to a fight against a togepi before, which only meant that he'd neither met gods nor kings.
"Let's be fair, Olivia at least has other duties to take care of. I'd hate to see us lose the Amberwell." Donovan didn't bother providing excuses for Habiba or Lyanna. There weren't any to be had.

He was thankful not to see the togepi leap into the battlefield. He wasn't sure how he felt about fighting baby pokemon. (He knew how he felt about fighting scourge baby pokemon. Kill 'em dead. Easy.)
He'd seen charizards before though. He sighed. "Everyone and their dog just has to have a charizard."

"I wonder what would happen if I suddenly switched to water types. Is there a rule against that? Oh, right. Atalanta would never let me hear the end of it."
He shook his head, lit a second cigarette (was the first really gone so soon?) to help him weather the thought. "That wouldn't be worth it."
Also, he liked steel types. They were cool.
