This world is inhabited by creatures that we call pokemon. People and pokemon live together by supporting each other, but now the scourge threatens the safety of the entire region. Kohaku has become a dangerous place, where children stay at home and only brave souls go adventuring.
Welcome to KOHAKU. Come for the nightmares. Stay for the tea and crumpets.
The season is SUMMER. It is easy for survivors to forage for food from the land, as there are entire abandoned farms ready for harvest. On the downside, you can smell the corpses.

"...ah. that's... unfortunate." it really is. there's no sarcasm, nor pity in her voice, in its inflection; just a person making small-talk, using a factual tone of voice for the least misunderstandings possible.
"traditionally we're trainers, although we have had a few breeders and researchers over the years. as a whole, though, we own a training company, and things like that." among other things.
Training company? Dan can't say he ever heard of that idea before. Then again, it wasn't like Humilau was a big trainer town, gym leader Marlon excepting.
Still, a training company probably would've been pretty well-known. If his family didn't know about Verte's before, over the past year they probably would've at least heard of them by now.
"basically we help starting trainers. like the pokemon academy, except it's more advanced." the whole thing had been great-grandfather soterio's idea, and it had taken off well. but that doesn't mean that her family stayed clearly on the right side of the law.
Mine are breeders. I used to help them around and did a lot of the heavy lifting. Sometimes I wonder where I'd be now if everything stayed that simple." He shrugged. Not that at this point he dwelled on it too much. He's a ranger now, and he's come to accept that duty with 100% conviction.
Of course, the ultimate test of faith awaited him outside the city limits. Would he still be so confident after such a trial by fire?
"You think you'll stick with your family's business?"
Another hand dealt. Dan may not have been having the best luck with the game, but Ambrose was sure enjoying himself. He silently cheered as each card was played, occasionally reaching into Dan's backpack and cramming his mouth full of snacks.
The backpack wriggled angrily, another claw slapping Ambrose's away. The crab sighed: ever since Dan started using his backpack like some kind of Baby Bjorn for the new guy, the Clauncher had been hogging all the snacks. Yeah, yeah, post-mortal rehab and all, but did rehab really have to involve always getting the last of the Oreos?
two tens. verte considers folding again, then decides to bluff it and slides a few tens chips forward. "yeah, probably. everyone expects me to." the so-called 'prodigy' had to play her part, after all.
the wiggling backpack gets a raised eyebrow from her, though. "what're you keeping in there? a pokemon out of its ball?" ...although that's very likely, given where they are.

Expected to, huh. For a bit, Dan wasn't sure if it was Verte or her family speaking there. But this wasn't really a time to be asking about any issues like that.
"Oh, that's where Rollins has been napping. I tried leaving him back at the hotel room so he could get some proper rest, but it seems he likes staying in there.
Say hi, Rollins."
A Clauncher poked its head out, lazily waving a bag of chips. There seemed to be a small pillow tucked beneath its other claw, which the shrimp Pokemon hastily retreated to after its quick introduction.
"Yeah, he's pretty shy right now. He . . . had a second chance, so he's been pretty cautious. Once you get his mouth running there's no stopping it, though."
He chuckled at the Eevee's antics. "Eh, you get used to it. TMine are always crawling over me too.
You do know you're going to have to stop that soon, though, right Ambrose?"
The crab nodded, clacking his claws together eagerly. Beyond worth it, for the grand transformation coming next.
verte does not ask after second chances. she's had plenty of her own. instead, she smiles at the relationship between krabby and trainer. "sounds like you've got a handleful with both of them."
the eevee's perched on her head now, and the others at the table are giving them funny looks. oh well. eevee's not particularly concerned - he could knock them all down with swift, after all!
Ambrose simply spread his arms in a grand gesture of "Everyone! Look at me!" What was wrong with these people? Hadn't they ever seen a crab before? Honestly, between this and the barfight Ambrose was starting to wonder if people in Nerio just glared 24/7.
Rollins didn't really care. Napping and snacking until his strength was built back up: that's all he needed.
"like you wouldn't believe. the rivalry between my gardevoir and my blaziken is astounding." the two wouldn't stop competing, either in the dream world or out of it. not to mention athena had been quite the troublemaker before she'd evolved.
